I got mine today. They appear to be the same drivers and fundamentally the same design as my first pair (which were bough soon after they were introduced and reviewed by Gene). Here are the differences.
1) The old ones are labeled "EMP 41-SE/B" on the back while the new ones say "EMP E41-B".
2) The new ones come with a port plug, the old ones did not. (I would appreciate any comments on this). I'm guessing with sub you would plug the port, but have a hard time believing these speakers could tighten up much more!
3) On the old ones, next to the phase plugs was a amber/resin looking ring, the new ones seem to use an injection molded ring made of black plastic. The new ones have a bit more finished look FWIW. I have no idea how performance might be affected.
4) The old grill did not fully cover the front panel- it was a strange irregular pentagon shaped grill. I never cared for it. I will keep the grills off so the only difference is the top two grill mounts are located at the top corners instead of between the woofer and tweet.
For a while these speakers were being made in a curved cabinet (kind of like the EMP Impression series, if memory serves), I liked the look of the original cabinet better and am happy to see they returned to it!
You can see pictures of the originals here.
