To put this thread back on topic, I literally just got off the phone with Chris over at Emotiva. As you can see by my sig I have a somewhat:)rolleyes:) out of date AVR, and I've been kicking around the idea of separates.

Chris just spent the last fifteen minutes on the phone with a guy like me who has very little knowledge of the world outside of AVR's, explaining what the capabilities of their yet to be released pre/pro (?...did I get that right?) will be and which amplifier(s) would be best to drive my current speaker set up.

If their customer service is any indication as to the quality of their equipment then I'll look forward to giving Emotiva my business in the future.

Their customer service was very responsive to me...when I was shopping. After the sale, it was a different story.

I just say that as another potential point of reference. I'm not bashing them.

Adam, sorry if I missed it, but what was your overall experience with their product?

I ordered an RPA-1 and an IPS-1. Ignoring customer service, here's my experience:
  • First RPA-1 died within two days and sent a power surge through my speakers.
  • Second RPA-1 has worked fine since August 2007. The extra power provides quite a nice improvement in my system over my receiver's amps when I play it loud (negligible difference at normal listening volumes).
  • IPS-1 emits a loud humming noise when powered and nothing connected, so it is inherent in the amp itself. I no longer use it because the hum is louder than movie audio at times, and I sit about 10 to 12 feet away. A real disappointment.

Amazing!....

I just wanted to say that I opened this thread because of the title. However, after reading through, I was very dissapointed to learn that the OP didn't title this thread & that Mike C changed it. Dissapointed because I really enjoyed reading the title & the OP's comments after seeing he was from Canada, which allowed me to read through in a slow talking Canadian voice (think Rick Moranis in those Molsen commercials).

That being said & even though I hate his ported subs with a passion :), I would like to pat Mike C on the back for the thread title. Maybe one of my all time favs. Also, thank you for keeping this beast open. I am entertained!

John72953.... Keep fighting the good fight! I'm with you 100%! Put it in a mag or put it in a trash bag!

I agree if Absolute Sound hasn't reviewed a product, then it can't be that good.

Quite frankly we simply don't have orgasms over audio products like some of the esoteric mags tend to no matter how good the products are
Gene,

I am going to make a sig quoting you. Thanks!

My MPS1 is awesome if I don't touch it, if I touch it, it quits working and I was way less than impressed with EMOs CS. I would never buy another product from them.

Any of you guys have a XPA-3 or 5? I'm planning to get one in the next month or so...Any reported quality issues?

I have to say I'm still not sure about Chinese made audio products, simply because I've never had any luck with them. My adventure started out buying what was considered a very good tube headphone amplifier. After playing it for one hour or so it began to buzz in both channels. It took me nine weeks to actually get my $500.00 back. Then I bought a tuner that was dead out of the box. They at least returned my money fast. Now after hearing all the hype, and reading all the reviews I bought an Emotiva RSP-2. The first one had a problem with a sticky volume control when using the remote, and a terrible phono stage hiss. My 37 year old Crown IC-150 was many times quoted. Got the replacement the other day, and everything works fine, but the center indents on the bass, and treble are off center and shifted noticeably towards the right. The Emotiva logo silk screening is terribly bad. The logo looks like something on a pirates flag all incomplete. Neither of these issues are worth sending it back for, but very aggravating to look at. Just cheapens the whole unit, and makes it look like a high end want to be! That's to bad because it is an excellent sounding preamp. I have to wonder if these short comings are worth the money saved. I called Jennifer at Emotiva, and asked her to see if Lonnie had a name plate I could put over the logo. I haven't heard back yet. This was Friday morning. I own a business, and if one of my customers were calling about an issue on a replacement unit, I'd be all over it. So really I see nothing outstanding about their customer service either. Sure they replaced it in 2 days, but I'd expect nothing less. I'm not sure I'd do it again. Just being honest here.

The quality of a product has nothing to do with the country in which it is made. It has to do with the components used and who put it together. That being said, I've never had a problem with an EMO product Their customer service has always been top notch, IMO. :)

I agree with Soundman and will add this as well.

Regardless of which country it was built in (including China), it's a quality-control issue. There is no doubt that Chinese manafacturers have been known to interchange specified componants with cheaper versions to save cost. It thereby becomes incumbant upon the client (name manufacturer of your choice) to implement controls that see to it all products are built according to the standards and with their specified product componants. This can only be done by overseeing and supervising any off-shore factory on a regular basis with personal visits and audits. This needs to be a hands-on exercise. One cannot simply sign a contract and expect things to run smoothly. It will not happen.

I think you'll see that those companies who employ such a pro-active stance have less product reliability issues than others.

Just my 2 CDN cents!

John

I have owned the LMC-1, LPA-1, RSP-1, RPA-1, DMC-1, and XPA-3. I never had an issue with any of them, they all worked perfectly.

People fall in love with stuff, thats just the way it goes. We find security in believing in things. I do it too.

Reviews can be helpful for getting an idea of what a product is about, but they won't really tell you how reliable a product is or even how it preforms. Measurements are a good tool, but, I've had a lot of products that measured well but didn't hold up or had quality issues...especially when trying to save some money. Audioholics went through four units in their review someone posted on here. Firmware, a hum (that another member compains about also), then a lightening strike ... but the review is absolutely gushing. Then there are a number of people saying they had problems with theirs and customer service trouble. Plenty of the gushers don't even own an Emotiva.

In my opinion, it seems a bit sketchy. If you want to try it though, its cool to take a risk now and again, how else are you going to find new stuff? *shrug* Buy with an American Express and if its junk return it... and if they give you any trouble just deny the charge and ship it back (with tracking!!!).

As someone who has experienced chinese manufacturing first hand, you do need to consistantly monitor them. But who knows, maybe they do have someone living there watching the line.

Here's a follow up: They have been very nice about this situation. Lonnie and Dann have shown that Emotiva will stand strong behind their product.

Ya, the real amazing part is they actually gave me three options.

1. A full money back refund.
2. Shipping out a new replacement.
3. re-adjusting the price I paid for the unit.

I did not expect the last one. I couldn't bring myself to accept the price cut as the unit is already well worth the price their asking for it, unlike so many things you buy today.
That last offer was a deal changer for me. It showed me that they really are willing to bend over backwards to satisfy a customer. A solid company with very smart business men.

I haven't read through the whole thread yet. Maybe I should, but I don't have time lately. However, I just wanted to throw my 2 cents in there (in todays market that would equal about 1.26 cents). Anyway, I have an XPA-3. It works absolutely flawlessly. It provides plenty of juice and it stays stone cold. I haven't had a single problem with it. My experience with this company has been terrific and I wouldn't hesitate to use them again.

Tony, that is great news! I'm glad that you had a good experience.

I expected something similar based upon what people had said about them. I did not get that experience, though.
