EMO craps on Rat...what to do?

Well since the EMO lost an optical Isolator and is in the mail to be serviced/replaced, it leaves me with no center channel. Now my Ratatouille BR just arrived and I dont know what to do. Can I hold out and wait for the amp repair? Should I use a phantom mode for the center? How long can you hold on to something you are dying to see? This is a true crisis for a guy setting home without a job; I mean...it's the first time in a month I have had to use my brain....help me....:D

You should send it to me to watch while you wait for your amp to be repaired. :D

I dont see any "phantom modes" on my AVR. Are they available or do you just say "no" to center?

You are right Greg, just set the center channel to "No" on your AVR and then the center channel information should be sent to the main two speakers and then imaged as if there was a center. Be sure to sit in the "Captain's Chair" otherwise it will sure be an interesting sounding movie ;).

I tested it with the little short story on the disc; it sounds pretty good but I seem to lose some of the 'panning' back and forth of the sound. I cant (or wont) get to the back of my AVR to bypass the amp; do you think I would be better off connecting the center to the AVR via using RCA interconnects or just watch it with no center?

If its not to hard to test I would say try both ways out and see which you prefer more. But having a center will give you a much more full movie experience especially if you aren't in the "sweet spot." If the center isn't getting quiet enough power you might here some slight distortion in more dynamic sections, but I doubt you will with your receiver/speaker combo at reasonable listening levels. I would say get the center hooked up if possible.

Honestly, I would just wait for your amp to get fixed, I know it sucks, but you don't want to lose out on the full experience.

btw, how did you find out what the exact problem was? And what is Emo doing to fix it, are then sending you a new module, or are you having to send the bad module in for repair?

I have the perfect solution. Turn the center "ON." Then turn the captions on and make up the character voices in your head.:D If you don't like that idea, you and the wife could just act out the movie with the dialogue on the screen.

Well, I found 16 AV cables, 1 comp cable, 6 IR emmitters still unwrapped (that I dont even remember buying) 2 bookshelf speakers, 50ft of 10AWG speaker wire, 3 Dish sat boxes, 1 Tivo, A wireless headphone (forgot I had one) and at the bottom of my closet; the RCA connections. About the time I found them it occured to me that they wont work; banana plugs dont fit into RCAs.

The answer is in the thread named "EMO took a dump".

I kind of like that idea but I think we should be drunk if we do that.

Ok. Lonnie said it was an optical isolator issue. When using a 12v trigger the modules are turned on via the optical isolator, since this one was fried, it turned on via the audio signal. The increased DB during the calibration was caused by the AVR cranking up the volume for the channel that wasnt working. When the "sick" module kicked on after it read an audio signal the AVR auto cal had that side cranked way up.

The soluion is sending it back(free shipping) and they will test it and either fix it or send a new one with a 24 hour turn around

Thanks... just found the other thread. Well it sounds like they are on top of it, and the turnaround time won't be too bad. I would just wait it out, you will be back in business in no time.

Greg, I'm missing why you don't just power the center channel with your receiver. Is it because it's too hard to get to the connections? Weren't you using the receiver before you got the MPS-1 recently?

Oh, yeah...wait to watch Ratatouille? Are you nuts? That's a fun movie. You should watch it tonight. Heck, you should watch it now. :) And why search for a job when you could be spending that time connecting the center channel to the receiver?

The AVR is almost impossible to get to at this point. It would require removing 300lbs of crap out of the credenza just to get to the back of it. Since my amp will be back in action next week, not going through the trouble.

Oh and I feel like I dont have a lot of incentive to look for a job; my full paycheck comes every week, my corporate credit card still works, my company phone still works, I have full benefits...man this company has to be the worst at letting people go...

Well, what else do you have to do? :)

Sorry if I missed this part too (had to use my brain today, so it's about worn out), but how are you powering your two front speakers? Also, do you have another amp or receiver sitting around that you could use for the center?

I pulled the left channel module and sent it in, changed the speaker wires and cable from the center to the left so I could play music (it is easy to get to the amp). This left me without a center amp.
