DVD & VHS combo for VHS transfer

I have been looking for a combo player to transfer 20 hours of home video vhs tapes to dvd formate. I was then going to keep the unit as my dvd player but none of the combo units seem to have dvd play back that is worth a crap; only good for the transfer of the tape. LG and Panasonic are highly regarded for their transfer capabilities.
So I had another thought;
1. transfer the tapes via cables from my "old" vhs machine to a new dvd player/recorder. This way I should be able to upgrade my dvd player and avoid the negatives I stated above about crappy DVD playback. Would this work and which player would you recomend?
2. other thoughts.
Thanks
Maggie

I'm in the process of doing the same thing. I haven't produced any results yet, but I'm following the same line of thought. You can't upgrade the quality of the tape; therefore, I looked for a DVR that got decent reviews and wasn't expensive. I got a panasonic ES20 off Ebay for less than half of retail. The kids are using it in their room. Hope this helps.
