After 25 years of recording onto VCRs I finally upgraded to a phillips DVD recorder. At first I thought it was great. Then I tried to record off of HBO and guess what? I can't!
I have charter cable and every premion channel i have from HBO, Cinamax< showtime and even the western channel I can't record because it's copyright proteced. I called dish network to check with them and you can;t record their HBO ether.

But it still works for the old VCR.

Has anyone else encountered this problem.?

what type of video and audio connections are you using to try and record it with?

I have tried the componet (3 video plugs) and the HDMI from the back of the cable box.

with HDMI you wouldnt be able to, But I dont know why you wouldnt be able to record it off the component video outputs. As far as i know no copyright type data is sent over that connection. I suppose I could be wrong though

I don't know of any DVD recorder that has component video inputs. Composite, yes, but not component.

Hi Ho is right. The best video input I have seen on a DVD recorder is S-Video.

I use it on my Panasonic DVD recorder. I use my Dish DVR to record. When I watch a program or F1 race, I then record to dvd and edit out the commercials while watching/recording.

If I want a dvd movie copied, I have my brother do it on his computer with great results. Though he is not able to record every disc as many have protection enabled.

My point is that you can't record to a DVD recorder from a "premion channel". Such as HBO or Showtime. You still can on a VCR. They have only been broadcasting the “protection” signel for the past few months, And you can’t transfer it through a DVR either.

Have you tried using the coax cable from the wall? That is, if the burner has an 'antenna' input.

I have been using a cyberhome DVD recorder for about 1.5 years and never had any problems recording. I don't have component inputs just s-video and composite. What is funny is that I paid 89 bucks for this thing and it will play any standard def DVD from any country I have tried. PAL, SECAM etc.

I think that the box must have some copyright protection through the component outs. Were these the HD versions of HBO?
