I know this is not exactly audio territory, but I'm looking to replace my old vhs deck with a dvd recorder(maybe with a vhs in it too?). I would like decent audio from the new unit but I don't want to spend the amount of $$ the HDD decks require. I'm thinking of going with a unit that writes to dvd-ram to be able to "time shift". Any suggestions out there?

I bought an LG DR1F9H DVD Recorder last week. It records to DVD-RAM, and upconverts to 1080i/720p too. I haven't had a chanch to make any recordings yet, but playing movies & music seems fine.
