DVD player instead of av receiver

I'm about to buy a surround sound system, but didn't know if I need to buy one with an av receiver. My t.v. has enough inputs for all my components plus more. So I was wondering, if I just bought one of those systems with a dvd player, could I have a digital audio out from t.v. go to the dvd player and have everything working fine? My friend told me that it won't decode the signals into 5.1. I know the dvd sound should work fine, but having something like my 360 go through the t.v., then to the player, will 5.1 sound still work? Thanks in advance.

A DVD player does not accept input from any other device - it is output only, not to mention that you can't attach speakers to it.

If you want to use the TV speakers for everything just connect the dvd player and xbox directy to the TV.

It is actually a Home Theater in a Box. It has an amplifier, tuner, and surround processor built in to one box.

It is very limited in that it has only 1 input. If all you ever have is the aforementioned XBox it will work.
