DVD Analog Audio & Digital Audio Connections

I have a Pioneer DV 565 and want to setup so that I can play DVD movies, DVD Audio, SACD and CD.

Do I need to connect all the following Interconnects to my AV Receiver or will I duplicate functions?
1. 2 Channel Audio Out (for CD)
2. 5.1 Channel Audio out (for DVD-A and SACD)
3. Digital Audio out (For DVD Movies)

I want the best quality output for each type of disc and the receiver has the required connections for all the above if necessary.

#2 is required for sacd and dvd-a.
#3 is required for DD and DTS to pass the bitstream to the receiver for decoding.
#1 is only necessary if you want to let the dvd player do the decoding of digital formats instead of the receiver or if you just want the option of comparing the digital vs analog feeds.

Hi Guys,

Just got my new DV563 delivered today!

Set up tomorrow.

I will be disconnecting my Pan S35S, can I just switch over the cables from the Panny to the Pioneer and then add the 5.1 to the reciever?

The #3 is an audio cable? TosLink? Optical? Not sure about all of this.

You can use either the digital coax or the digital optical output (whichever the dvd player has). Note that Toslink refers to the connector used on optical cables as opposed to RCA connectors used on coax cables.

Yes you can hook up all three (5.1 analog, optical or coax digital, and analog) although you won't really need the analog connection.

All you need is the 5.1 cables and the toslink/coax.

5.1 for SACD/DVD-A
toslink/coax for DVD and CD.

I once did some listening test on cables for my DV-565A, and by chance noticed 2-ch out was a little better. Not sure why, f.e. didn't cross on receiver inputs. But I'd recommend to check it out if you want to optimize for stereo tracks too.

In addition to video functionality, If you are using this as your primary music source and want to play standard redbook CD's I would recommend hooking up the 2 channel audio connection and the digital connection and doing an A/B on the sound.....trust me, there should be a huge difference. Most players have better on board DAC's than the receivers do, but an A/B test will tell the truth. My Denon CD player has optical and analog outs.....I hooked both up to my receiver and A/B'd.....the analog outs powered by the Denon's Burr Brown DAC's literally blew away the optical connection. I believe you will have to hook up the optical connection on your DVD player anyways to get 5.1 surround sound...the standard analog cables won't handle that.
