Dual Center Speakers

I already wen't out of my budget getting the BP7001SC towers, and I told my lady friend I want a sub for my birthday... so hopefully with the $600 I'll be getting back from the gov. in a few months, I'll be able to buy the receiver. Then I'll be saving up for a new tv for the bedroom... right now I'm just using some old 19" sanyo crt tv. This hobby is just waaaay too addicting.

I see in your sig you only have one amp... did you sell off the other one?
No, since I'm no longer using 2 center speakers, the extra MPS-2 is just sitting there unused, so I took it off my sig.:D

I guess I could sell it...or just keep it as a spare.

You know the BP7001SCs are only about 4" shorter than the BP7000SCs. I wonder how much was the shipping? Probably close to $200?:D

I guess we truly are audioholics!

Shipping is $150 for the pair... so I figured that to be very reasonable... $2150 shipped for a practically brand new mint condition pair of BP7001SC towers seems to be a great deal to me, so I couldn't pass it up, even though I didn't have all the money for it right now. But that's what credit cards are for, emergencies :D

Yeah, they are 4" shorter than the BP7000SC and 6" taller than my BP10s, so they should look great next to my giant tv. I can't wait to get them and move the BP10s to the surround back, my system will really come alive then... not that it's at all bad now.

LOL. Yeah, I like that EMERGENCY part.:D

Man, your system will be pretty special.

Congrats again!

Hey, I have 17 DT speakers total, what do I win?
Did I win?
Holy macaroni!
And people call me a DT fan boy?

So what do you guys think -- should I keep the extra CLR3000 and buy another one to use in a 7.1 setup?

Can you and GlocksRock be objective about this?:D

If I buy another CLR3000, that only gives me 8 DT speakers, including the Sub.:)

I would only be a DT Junior compared to you guys!:)

I would just buy 2 good speakers and throw away the rest of that junk:eek:

I'm sorry, Greg. What did you say?

I got **S**T**A**T**I**C** all over my screen. I can't read your post **S**T**A**T**I**C**.:D

I say don't buy another clr 3000, but return it and get two more of something else to go back to 7.1. You know you will go back to 7.1 once you get the BD50 since you will be able to enjoy all those 7.1 dts-hd ma movies, and not having all 7.1 speakers will drive you crazy, you know it will... so immediately go out and get more speakers.

Yeah, I'm going to try to return it today. I hope they let me. It's considered a "special order" since they don't keep the CLR3000 in stock (they only keep the CLR2300). The purchase receipt actually says that "special orders" cannot be returned.:(

So what if they don't let me return the CLR3000?

Just put it up on craigslist, or ebay... don't know how much you paid for it, but I'm sure you can get a good bit for it since it's still practically new. Or if they don't let you return it, you can keep it as a rear center channel for a 6.1 setup, or just get another one and go 7.1, it's still not a bad speaker at all and would make for a nice rear surround speaker.

I've been meaning to upgrade my center to the 3000 for months now, I will happily buy it from you if you can't return it. PM me.
Thanks for offering. However, I was able to return the CLR3000 today. That was close.

I can't believe I even thought about using 2 center speakers to begin with.

The CLR3000 does sound great.

Timbre -- not tree-falling

You wouldnt want to change to a different speaker company and lose the timbre matching.
Intenresting thought that the Timbre matching is consistent compeltley accross a speaker line.

It seems that the center is maining used for voice and timbre matching would not be of as much impartance as matching hte fronts and surrounds.

Similarly, the sub matching is some what irrelevent. IMHO.

Therfroe, only upgrade one speaker if you can upgrade the whole sytem!

I plan to upgrade part of my systme to the Rocket series. It will be difficult to upgrade the surrounds from Defintive tech because they are in-celing speakers. An the rocket upgrade will be two-phase first Center and next year 1000 Tower fronts.

Later,

How do you quadruple?

Actually those speakers being very close together playing identical program will have a gain of about 6db over single speaker. You are correct about the amp though.
If you go from one speaker to two speakers, logic says you have a doubling or +3dB

I am curious , you state a + 6dB gain which is four times. I stated earlier I didn't feel there was a synergistic effect 1 +1 = 4 Could you please explain?

Thanks in advance!

Having the fronts and center produce a seamless sound is crucial. The rears and center backs less so. The problem of blending center and fronts has been addressed previously and recently.

I would say that it's because Def Tech's are twice as awesome as all other speakers, but I'm sure that's not the case... hopefully someone else will have a better explanation because I was wondering the same thing.

LOL. That was my initial thought as well.:D

Anyway, I returned the second CLR3000 and sold the second MPS2 as well.:D

As soon as I get home today, I'm removing one speaker cable (& corresponding amp) from the CLR3000 and just use one simple speaker cable.:D

This is what I know. Before I added the second CLR3000, the SPL meter read 65dB-C. After I added the second CLR3000, the SPL meter read 73dB-C. That's an increase of 8dB. So I would agree with TLS Guy that it added an average of 6dB.

Well you have two bites at the cherry so to speak. 3db for two sound sources and if the speakers are VERY close together and playing the same program, another 3db from driver gain. That is close to the OPs observation. He recorded 8 db, because of placement issues that would be possible.
