DTS, it has less compression. But I much prefer Dolby PLII over DTS NEO 6 for stereo sources like TV.

While it has less compression, the algorythm is more important ;)

Also, if I recall, DTS carries its algorithim with it hence the need for larger files, but I could be wrong, from time to time ;)

They are equivalents. Why should one sound different unless one laters the EQ in or out, or other monkey business that was the case early on.

it seems to me (opinion only here) that movies sound better in DTS, but the concert DVD's (the four or five I own, anayway) seem to work better with Dolby Digital.

Although DTS is more lossless (much more data intensive than Dolby) it really all depends on how the sound tracks were recorded as to which sounds best. I have seen more than a few movies where the Dolby Digital track sounded better than the DTS track. In actual listening I find them hard to tell apart. I suppose if you want the best (if both were recorded with equal quality) probably the DTS would be better. My own personal opinion is that I wouldn't go out of my way just to have a DTS sound track as I enjoy the Dolby Digital every bit as much. (Just my own opinion)

Maybe they still mess up, alter the EQing for differences :D

for me, the problem seems to be in the voices.. they sound very flat coming out of the center speaker with DTS during concert footage.

That is interesting. If the voice is so flat for music, why would it not be for movies? If they are as well, then why would it be better for movies? If movie dialogue is not flat, why the difference? Curious

With the choices my Denon has given me, I have experimented with this delemma. I think it depends on source, room, the listener's preferences etc. etc. I like DTS movie soundtracks, they seem to have more oomph in the sound effects. I have a concert DVD with a DTS sountrack that sounds great. But, TV with DD 5.1 is also great. Now, DPL IIx (cinema) is fantastic for CD and regular TV, preferred over NEO 6. But I switch to DPL IIx (music) for any music programs. I have just moved my rear surrounds closer together for a more pronounced rear effect, vast improvement and am looking forward to borrowing "The Incredibles" this week to experiment with DD ES/EX. I'm glad Denon gave me the options.

DTS has a higher frequency range than Dolby, for movies DTS wins hands down, but for standard TV viewing theyre both equal

Are you sure? Do you have a link to Dolby where it gives Fr that is less? How much less? Prologic used to be limited but I doubt DD is.

Dts!!

For movies DTS wins hands down espcially with DD-EX Matrix Vs DTS-ES Discrete since DD doesnt have a discrete one. For stereo sources DPL i think might be a tad better IMO. And yes dts is less lossy with its better compression.

IMO, no contest either way. Play a DTS ES Discrete 6.1 dvd and you'll never go back. I've tried both DTS Neo 6 Music vs Pro Logic II Music and I think the highs are better with Neo 6. PLIIx just cuts too much out and I like to hear highs in my music. Now with stereo tv, the Denon's 7 channel stereo is better than both because your rear surrounds are on all the time, and still allowing for awesome separation while the two other options only come on once in awhile, and at a much lower volume.

My ears go vote for DTS

I really feel like DTS is more dynamic. When comparing the two formats on "Remember the Titans" I can definetly tell a difference in the dynamics of the sound. While keeping the volume level at its same position and switching back and forth from DTS and DD I can tell an audible difference between the two formats. Now I am not saying one has clearer sound than the other because both formats sound great. I am just saying that at the same volume level DTS is more dynamic especially with bass. I have turn the volume up on my reciever to get the same dynamics as DTS. I prefer DTS discs, but it is just a matter of preference.

One mans opinion

DTS music sounds incredible----can't wait to try DVD-Audio and SACD---

you can't really compare DTS, a discrete format with DPL, a matrixed format.

That's like comparing a car to a bicycle. Now, if you want to compare something, try DTS to Dolby Digital. I think that's the crux of this thread.

Just watched The Incredibles. My Denon displayed Dolby D + DPL IIx C. Wow!

If the movie has the option of DTS or DD always decode in DTS, or always decode in the highest quality possible.
