That is what it reads on my Denon 5308CI.

I just hooked a $170 Oppo 980 SACD/DVD-A player to the 5308CI via a single HDMI cable.

Now I know for sure that I'm actually getting DSD-Direct.:D

And then I hit that Pure Direct button and the LCD reads "DSD MULTI PURE DIRECT". And then the LCD turns black.:D

Awesome sound. Awesome tight bass. Very pleased.

Yeah that's what I use, Oppo 980 with my Onkyo 805 in direct DSD mode. Although I've heard some folks prefer the LPCM output from the 980 instead so I may give that a try soon.

The other SACD/DVDA player I have is the Denon 1930ci and it doesn't have the ability to do DSD via HDMI, just multichannel PCM.

That's what I heard too. So I also tried the LPCM, instead of DSD. I can't tell the difference so I really don't understand what they are talking about.

But given the fact that DSD-direct almost seems like a rarity these days, especially via HDMI, you just gotta do DSD-direct HDMI!:D

Even the $3800 flagship Denon DVD-5910CI doesn't do DSD-SACD via HDMI!

So after having this receiver for a bit, how do you feel the sound compares from the receiver, to the separates you were using previously? Can you tell a difference, or does it sound the same, but with more options now?

I've listened to a lot of 2.0 music in Direct mode, 5.1 music in DSD-SACD & DVD-A PCM, and movies in TrueHD/DTS-MA/PCM on the 5308 Receiver.

Compared to the separates analog components, including the Class A analog from Acurus (RL11 & 200X3) and the Denon PMA-2000IVR, the Sound Quality from the 5308 Receiver sounds exactly the same as those analog separates.

The only difference I can tell is that the 5308 receiver has less NOISE from the speakers when in STOP mode in the players (BD, SACD, DVD, etc.) than those analog separates.

In stop mode, those separate analogs would produce a hissing noise, but the 5308CI is completely silent. I guess the signal-to-noise ratio on the 5308CI is better than those analog separates.
