Downloading music from Ipod to PS3

Well, I don’t listen to a lot of MP3 music but the wife does. This was first handled by having the Ipod docking devise on my Yamaha AVR but since my wife’s new car is “Ipod” ready the Ipod has not left her car. The issue is; I have no idea how to load these onto the PS3. I was hoping all I needed to do was connect the ipod to the PS3 but when I tried that the PS3 recognized it but said there was no data available to copy. Any suggestions on how to do this?

Have you tried using the triangle button and choosing the option show all to view all the files on the iPod? If that doesn't work I think it is because Apple has some propreitary method of formatting files on the ipod so you might need to take the files off the ipod with your computer and then tranfer them to the ps3 via a usb device or something.

I did hit the triangle button and that's when it said no data was available. So you think I can download from ITines on my computer to a memory stick and then put that in the PS3?

I am not very good with computers.

If you still have all the songs on your computer you are set. Just take a memory stick, whatever kind you like that works with a ps3 (SD, Sony cards, Compact flash or pretty much anything with a usb port) put all the music on that then copy it over to the ps3 using the triangle commands.

Shouldn't be any harder than that.

the MP3/Music files on the iPod are hidden. Apple does this because they don't want to violate any laws behind piracy and you being able to take your entire library of songs and use the iPod to give away to everyone...and transfer music to the world, etc..

However, there are shareware applications on the web that will allow you to download songs from the iPod to a computer ( as mentioned above ). I have no idea how to transfer to a PS3 but you can do it to a computer and then using another USB device - like a USB Keydrive, etc.. to possibly move them to the PS3 if that's what you want to do. Also, I assume that the PS3 will read CDR's, so you may want to burn CDRs and transfer that way if the PS3 will allow you to copy files to it's HD. I don't have a PS3 so I don't know how to make it happen.

do a GOOGLE search for "ipod to computer" and the 1st hit will be a free app to take songs off any ipod and put them on your computer.

Yup, you shouldn't have any problems at all. Just transfer them to a portable source and then plug the source into the ps3 and choose copy.

It will be made easier if you also put them in a folder under the root called Music, since this is the default location in which the PS3 looks. I haven't tried going from an iPod, but the files themselves may not play due to DRM.

I don't know if there is a way to "share" iTunes so the rest of your network sees the files, but that would actually be the easiest way and wouldn't require you to load anything onto the PS3; just stream them from the computer. I have my laptop and my desktop and I stream from Windows Media Player 11 to the PS3 from both.

On the ps3 you can choose an option that turns on media sharing. Once you have that option turned on. Go to itunes and under options there should be a media sharing option you can turn that on. Once this is done you can tell your ps3 to search for a media outlet and it should find the computer.

This will only work if your computer is always on and itunes is open whenever you want to listen to the music. Personally I am not a fan of the media streaming, partly because of my network, so I just keep all my media on an external HD.

Let me give it a try and see if it works and then if it fits this application. My computer is my laptop so it's not always on but I can turn it one when she wants to listen to the Ipod music.

You shouldn't have to turn anything on on the PS3, only on the computer side. Then you do "search for shared servers" on the PS3 under music and it will find whichever computers are on.

I don't leave my systems on, I just turn one on when I want to listen to something that is on one of them. I actually don't stream to it often because I have all the CDs right there and I don't buy music online. Note too that playback is sort of a pain when streamed because it doesn't really allow a good way to sort playback order yet; I am guessing it is something that will come in a future update. If it is stuff you have on CD, you can just insert it into the PS3 and rip it to the HD.

Well I was interested in trying to stream from the computer but no luck.

I go under music and it says 'search for media servers' (only choice I see) I hit yes and then it scans and says ' no media servers were found. I have ITunes opened on my computer and I am connected wirelessly.

I will have to check when I get home. Somewhere there should be an option in iTunes to "share content" or something to that effect (I don't use it much, just to transfer stuff to my Shuffle). I did it for Media Player, but not for iTunes because I don't have much stuff on it. For Media Player, you go to library > configure sharing and the PS3 will show up (has to be on) and you choose it, then you restart the PS3 and it will see what is available on the computer. I would think iTunes will be something similar, though with DRM (digital rights management) it may or may not.

I checked it out, and there is a tab for sharing "share to my local network" option

We have been troubleshooting a problem. We couldn't get it working with iTunes so I got him on WMP since I am more familiar with it. As far as I can tell everything is set up appropriately, but the ps3 is not detecting any media servers. I asked Greg to check a couple things when he gets home. Hopefully we can get it figured out.

These are the instructions I gave him to get media sharing set up. If anyone sees something wrong let me know.

Choose "library" again

Under Library select "Media Sharing"

Mark the check box that says "Share my media", do not close this window yet. Also, you might need to check the options as WMP has a habit of only having 2 star or more rated songs to be shared. You can just choose the option "share all" or something like that.

On the PS3 under music select "scan for media server"

The PS3 should now pop up in the the open window in WMP 11 as an "unknown device".

Select the "unknown device" then press "allow".

close the window, let the PS3 finish scanning (or rescan if needed), then it should be good to go.

With mine, I had the PS3 on when I did the share so WMP would see it. Once shared, the PS3 wouldn't see WMP, but I read here that you would have to reboot the PS3 once sharing was enabled. I rebooted the PS3 and then it saw it and worked fine for both my PC and my laptop and now it automatically sees both of them if they are on.
