Down the Rabbit Hole

It wasn't an assertion. It was a thought followed by a question.

I understand the crawl purpose/process. My situation dictates front wall or one specific opposing "corner", which didn't improve sound. So, it will go back to the FL corner. I will just have to do the best I can with the miniDSP.

I'm trying to find the fun in this. The new laptop should eliminate any hardware/compatability problems.
If you are not a masochist... it may not be fun. :D

You should try the crawl anyway just to see. I learned a lot from an hour of crawling around. especially understanding how the sound of the Low Frequencies changes based on placement. If you do it, just keep an open mind and you may surprise yourself and find a new better home than you thought possible.

I'm surprised it didn't work.

The Fun comes when you get it Dialed In as Best as Possible. Remember your not in a Perfect Room

I can do that. At just over 100lbs, it's a little bit of work moving them around. (thankfully, not a 175lb PB16 Ultra)

Before I start, shouldn't I move the other sub out of the room?

No, far from it. I may be polishing a turd, but it's what I got.

Just turn it off, and unplug all other speakers. You only want the Bass from that subwoofer, at your LP, playing.

I used the Gorillaz album Laika Come Home for this, but another good recommendation is Daft Punk's Get Lucky.
You want something with a good persistent bass line that doesn't change much throughout the song. You will be repeating it... A Lot, probably! ;)
(I said before, it took me about an hour the first time I did it.)
For me, I found it most noticeable to craw in towards, then away from a corner. Corners Amplify the bass. This is how I started HEARING the differences. Once I got used to that, I crawled out the WHOLE ROOM! It got a whole lot easier for me after I figured out the sound around the corners. :)

Ignorance is bliss. Starting to regret this adventure.

I was up for hours last night messing around. I keep having problems with getting tones to the AVR.

I was able to make some changes.

Today, I moved the FL sub to the spot between the sofa and end table. Couldn't get measurements, because of no test tones.

I did play some music and noticed a definite difference. The bass lost its punch. It was there, just thin.

This got me wondering if 2 channel stereo and HT require different approaches to the set up. Music should have the speakers/subs up front, just as it's produced. HT can and should be immersive, which requires speakers/subs surrounding the listener.

Does this make sense?
Sorry you’re having so many issues with the setup. Thought you might be used to that judging by the SVT in your handle!!!!! Sorry, I grew up in an eternal Ford and Chevy war. Just like in the Middle East. They fight over religion, and we fight over cars... couldn’t resist.

Anyway, no. As mentioned, bass won’t be treated differently by content. There’s bass sources, there’s the room, and there’s the MLP. You can’t move the room, so that leaves the LP and the subs. When you move one, it changes how the bass is perceived. Leaving the subs in place for example, you can walk around the room and hear how peaks and nulls are present in different areas where bass is really heavy(more so by boundaries) or really weak. Conversely if you could sit in the LP and have someone move the subs around while you sat there, you’d hear how the different locations of the sub affect how the waves hit the LP.
The point is, no. Bass is treated the sAme. The benefit is that ALL content is reproduced the best it can be.

No problem. I guess you're on the other side? :)
(I do have a GM product too)

Yeah, cars can be frustrating also. Especially the farther you move away from stock. Being mechanically inclined, I'm more comfortable working through those types of problems than tech stuff. Plus, you already know going in to it that the part you bought won't exactly fit.

I got a new laptop. I'm in the process of transferring everything from the old one to an external hard drive to put on the new one.

I wasn't sure about the bass. What you said makes sense.

I think the new laptop is going to make things a lot smoother for you. It bums me out to see you're having all these issues man. I know learning this stuff isn't really easy when everything I working right. I think the old laptop was adding to the aggro factor tho.

You may already have this Paul Simon song which I remember being recommended for the crawl.
I have no idea if it is better or worse than Ryan's recommendation, but it has a active, steady, repeating bassline:

I appreciate it.

I didn't have the right tool for the job. Now, I just need to download Adobe Air and get acquainted with the miniDSP program.

I'm sure most people here know what Paul Simon looks like, but just in case, I will point out that this video has Chevy Chase (it looks like him to me, but not Paul Simon) lip-synching the melody (which is actually sung by Paul), and Paul is singing background vocals and awkwardly trying to do something useful. My favorite place is where Paul is twiddling his thumbs while lip-synching the background harmony.

Yep. It's Chevy Chase doing what Chevy Chase does.

After getting beat repeatedly by PC Matic, I finally got everything downloaded. I have a lot of homework ahead of me. After looking around in the DSP program, it has confirmed that my knowledge is zero.

Since I am doing things differently, by having separate systems, I'm wondering if I should start with the stereo first. By doing so, I avoid the processing of the AVR.

I think I can hook into the front of the Marantz SA 8005, run the sweeps, and create my program. After that, I can then re-run Audyssey.

After playing around for a while and finding what does and does not work, I have realized just how frustrating this can be.

I am at this point below:
5th REW EQ with adj dsp eq out.jpg

I made adjustments to the EQ out on the miniDSP to achieve the green line from starting with the brown line.

I was using the EQ curve within REW as a starting point.

Any constructive thoughts/opinions on this current curve?
