Try running the speaker wires from the reciever to the sub and then from the sub to the speakers. That should give you some element of control.
I did this with an Onkyo when the sub pre out went kaput. It worked fine with no noticeable change of the sound.

Whoa, I would make sure you didn't damage anything by hooking the sub up inproperly. Properly set up, you shouldn't hear much difference in bass on most soundtracks. Your old speakers went down to 35Hz. That is pretty good. Some subs don't even go down to 35hz. You will hear a difference on movies and really bass intensive music like rap or pipe organs. Before you start fiddling around with it too much. Read the manual, get SVS on the phone to make sure you are set up right. Make sure you wire the sub properly, and set up the crossover right. Then you need to adjust the gain until the sub disappears into the music. I would guess the sub should be set to around 60-50hz to relieve those mains of the low frequencies. Double check your connections. Make sure your polaritry is right (black and red connections on the speakers).

yes, my tannoy's are really amazing, I've owned wharfedale, B&W and Yamaha speakers and I must say the Tannoy is the best out of the lot. They dip down to as low as 30Hz, so like you said, i dont really hear to much of a difference with most tracks. But on the rap songs and some jazz tracks, it makes a difference.

But nevertheless the SVS PB12-Plus2 really shows its stripes when it comes to playing movies. Totally brings in another dimension to the home theater experience.

I'm considering retiring the Nakamichi, every way i think of it, Its really not possible to get the setup sounding great with the new sub. I'll probably give it to someone in the family. I'm now pondering over a Rotel preamp+poweramp combo or a fat Denon AVR-4806 and a pair of Klipsch RF-83s
