Dolby Digital 5.1 & DTS 5.1 - do i need these?

What are these two audio formats and will I need them? I am currently comparring the VSX-01 and the VSX-03 from pioneer, and the only real difference between them, is that the vsx-03 will decode these two formats and the 01 will not. I will be watching BD movies through my PS3 and DVDs through an OPPO. I just dont want to go with the 01 and end up having the need to decode these two audio formats.

Anybody have the 411?

Both of these AVRs have Dolby® TrueHD and DTS-HD® Master Audio. You will get the basic Dolby Digital 5.1 & DTS 5.1 if you don't use Blu-Ray.

I wouldn'y worry much about transmission jitter.

But the 01 says it doesn't process these two formats at all.. im a tad confused.

So what are these two formats used for, and would I ever have a need? Excuse my ignorance... I really dont know one audio format from another at this point.. which i would need, and which I wouldn't! i am very new to this stuff and dont want buyers remorse wishing i had bumped up a level in my AVR choice.

The 01 decodes all of these so you are good to go. You need them for watching movies.

Thanks PD... I have had to go pretty budget all around, so dont laugh at my speaker choices now!

AVR - Pioneer Elite VSX-01 (in the mail)
Front - Polk RTi 10s (got them for $250 a piece!)
Center - matchin Polk C5
Surrounds - Polk FXI A4s. (in the mail)
Sub - ED 12" A3-300 with the upgraded driver

This was absolutly as much as I could spend for the entire project. As much as I would LOVE to get an expensive pair of Paradigms or the like.. i just didnt have the budget for them and still be able to get all 6 speakers, and an AVR. But non-the-less, iv heard the Rti10s and they are a lot of speaker for the money
