I think grilles should be used. I always use them. Speakers are far too often destroyed without the protection of a grill. If you destroy one driver, that can be the cause to have to go speaker shopping, as replacement for your damaged driver may be NLA. Leaving speakers unprotected is foolish, and not worth the risk.
