Folks, are there any members here that own both a Sony 550 BR player AND a Yammie 663 receiver? If so, please post here and let me know. I can not get my new Yammie 663 to display the new sound codecs when watching BR movies. Have any of you had this same problem? Mind to go over your settings with me? I am aware that the Sony 550 needs to bitstream the audio over hdmi to the 663. Then, the 663 will actually do the decoding of the raw bitstream data. So, why then will my 663 NOT display the new codecs? Have any ideas? Appreciate any and all input.

Cheers,

Phil

Yo Phil, I'm here. Ok, we assume HDMI connection (and nothing else right..._), and T-HD chosen on the BD itself. The first culprit is usually the player setting (it's most likely decoding internally).

I've set up a S350 before, and IIRC the "bitstream" option does not actually say bitstream. It was something like . . . "direct" ? . . .

It shouldn't be too hard to find. BD player menus are never that complex as far as that I have seen. Look for anything that might resemble output choices and the first one you see might very well be it.

Let us know how that goes. Just for future reference, here's an AVS thread of glitchy titles. If you ever get Harold/Kumar at Gbay, do NOT select DTSMA.

Otherwise, as far as 663 settings, I've no idea.

Thanks Jost, I knew you would chime in sooner or later. I have the Sony 550 set to "Direct". However, it must be in some of the other settings. John Garcia said he has not had any issues with the "Superbad" BR disc. My guess is, it is something in the player I have set wrong. Will take a closer look. Thanks for your help my friend. I really do appreciate it.

Cheers,

Phil

No problem, Phil. I briefly looked for an online s550 manual, and couldn't find it. I have to run soon, but if you link it here, I will look at it at some point in the next 24hrs for sure if you haven't figured it out already by then.

Now I'm starting to wonder if it's the 663 though. Hmmmmmm.

No optical cable, no mch analogs. You get surround sound, but no lit up logo. TrueHD WAS selected in the title. Hmm.

Q: if it's on "direct", what is the other setting called?

I will get the manual and see. I appreciate you taking the time to do this. Will get back to you in a bit. Here is a link for the 663 manual:

Phil, in a few minutes I'm gonna wander thru the manuals. However, you aren't selecting the uncompressed PCM track instead of TrueHD are you? I think Superbad has got both.

I'll report anything I see in a little while.

Ok, I'm not sure I'm making any headway here.

Do your BDP settings look something like this?:

HDMI selected

Audio (HDMI) = Auto

BD audio setting = direct

DD= DD (NOT downmix)

DTS = DTS (NOT downmix)

for the yammy, I'd be curious about page 46. from 5/amp on remote, go to 23/menu. Toggle to Signal Info, select/enter, and check out the audio information via OSD?

good luck, Phil.

OK so I know I'm not playing with the same equipment but I have my 350 set up the same way jostenmeat said to do it and my 2808 always shows the codec:) Can't see why Sony would have different settings just because it's a different model. Do you have options for the analog outputs??? Maybe it thinks that it has to decode the audio for analog out? Any way to turn that off?

Wow I think I just asked more questions than have been asked in this whole thread. Hope it's not something with the Yammy

Hey Jost, I made sure to check Dolby TrueHD 5.1. There is a way to select PCM5.1 too. However, when I select Dolby TrueHD 5.1 and press signal the OSD reads "Straight", DVD, HSMI. But on the 663 it just displays Dolby Digital. Then, I went back and selected PCM 5.1 to see what it was showing and viola it displays PCM on the 663's display. I also pressed signal and on the OSD it showed "PCM", DVD, HDMI. Guess, it is just strange. BTW, Superbad is a very fuuny movie. ;):p;)

Phil

Yes, my settings look like that. Direct with no down mixing. DD is set to DD and DTS is set to DTS. BD Audio is set to "Auto". Oh well, I get it figured out sooner or later..........LOL!!!! Thanks for your help Jost. Really appreciate you taking the time to help me out. I will mess w/it some more when I get the time. :):)

Good idea. I will look into it. There may be a way to turn the multi-channel outs off. Thanks for your input.

Ok Dave, I will do. However, it may be later this weekend because I am worn out. Lets just say it has been a very long day..........LOL!!! :D:D However, I do appreciate the tip my friend. ;);) As such, I will get back to you on it.

Dave, I looked pg. 66 over and not to sure what you are implying? Care to offer some clarification. Keep in mind, that I only have a 5.1 set-up AND the 663 can decode the news codecs via bitstream signal. It appears I still have much to learn. ;);)

Phil, I haven't looked at pg 66, and don't care to dl again, atm. But another random thought (and it's a stretch) just occurred to me.

have you ever updated your player's FW yet? I'm just curious if that would change anything. However, I want to repeat that this is definitely a stretch... but it's not a bad idea to update anyhoo, and there's nothing to lose.

I'd also get your hands on a different TrueHD track. Might I recommend The Dark Knight? :D

Cheers, Phil.

Hey Jost. Hope all is well my friend. I have already updated my Sony 550. It is my understanding the 663 does not need an update. Only the very early releases needed it. Yeah, I plan to get a few other BR discs to see what happens. I have already seen Batman, but hey would not mind seeing it again. Ledger was amazing in that one!!!! Just wished he was around for a sequel. ;);) Thanks once again, for your help.

So Jost, what did you come up with? Not sure if you have had the time yet or not. There really is no big hurry. Just curious as to what you have to say.

Cheers,

Phil
