I just read over page 66 and I think I might see what Davemcc is talking about. If you read the last note it says that if you are sending 480i/p video it will automatically send out only PCM over HDMI. What are your video settings set at? Funny how they are linked together.

It is set to 1080p. HDMI out on the Sony 550 to HDMI in on the 663 to HDMI in on my 1080p 42 " LG. Thus, HDMI is the ONLY audio and video connection I employ. Any other thoughts? Thanks for posting. ;);)

Hey, Phil, will take a bit of work, but whenever something like this happens, it's all about the "process of elimination".

-different bluray disc. If that fails still, I think two in a row is pretty solid evidence it's not your current BD.

-think of a friend, anyone, who has an HDMI receiver with decoders. Ask if they would humor you for only 10 minutes or so. Bring over player, hdmi cable, plug it in, fire it up. If it works, great, if not, it may be your player. Easiest would be if that friend has a BDP currently bitstreaming as well for the moment.

-more difficult would be bringing a different receiver into your home, for obvious reasons.

basically, we need to figure out if it's the player or receiver at fault. Sure, it might be the disc, but I consider that a very outside chance.

Sorry for the quizzical reply. I was short on time. I was looking at the various ways that the Sony determines which signal to send. The chart listed LPCM 7.1 as the output when using HDMI and a HD signal, but on closer examination I see in the notes that the Direct setting defaults to bitstream when the receiver is capable of decoding those formats. This may indicate that the player doesn't know that the receiver can decode the format or that the receiver is not working properly and the player knows not to send the bitstream.

This is awfully close to what happened to me with my first Integra. I couldn't get bitstream HD audio to work on the BD35 so I replaced it with the S550. That still didn't work so I went back to a BD35 with still didn't work. As it turned out, the Integra was faulty and replaced under warranty. It's very possible that the receiver either isn't telling the Sony that it can accept the signal or, like my Integra, is simply incapable of receiving the signal due to some defect. If you can, a little experimentation with some different equipment may be in order.

BTW, is your Audio Output Priority setting still set to HDMI? If that were inadvertently switched, it could cause this problem.

I suggest you unplug the 550 for a few minutes, then turn it back on and do a "Reset to factory default". After that, set the BD audio setting back to "Direct" (because it defaults to "mix"), make sure the 550's HDMI output is setting to output 720p, 1080i or 1080p (may be try them all) and see if that works. If that does not work then try another BD player to see if the 663 is the problem.

Thanks guys, but I think I figured it out!!!! I rented Marley and Me today on BR. It is recorded in the 5.1 DTS HD Master audio codec. Once the BR loaded, I noticed that my 663 DTS HD Master icon lit up. It just does NOT show it in Big letters. The display just says "Straight", but the DTS HD Master icon lights up. Therefore, I assume I am getting it. Am I correct here guys? Thanks for all of your input. It is most appreciated. :):)

I think your receiver is messed up. The display should never say "Straight" when a guy is sitting at home watching "Marley and Me".

Folks, I am convinced that the 663 does NOT actually display the new codecs. There is, however, a small icon that does light up when watching BR discs. Oh well, it is really no big deal as it supposed to sound the same. It will display PCM when watching a BR with that codec as well. I also want to thank everyone here that offered me some assistance. You guys ROCK!!!!! :D:D
