If you begin to see signs of burn in, are there anyway's to remedy it?
Some plasmas have a mode where it blasts 100% white on the screen for a period of time which removes most of the issues. The better displays avoid theproblem altogether by implementing various technologies to minimize the possibility of burn-in.

My plasma, with which burn-in hasn't been an issue as I stated above, has several features to avoid burn-in.

Pixel-shifting: The entire screen shifts approximately 4 pixels in a clockwise direction. If memory serves, it moves about every 10-15 minutes.

Whitewash: Like Clint said, the entire screen goes white. How exactly this would remove a burned-in white or bright image is beyond me... wouldn't it just burn-in the rest of the pixels?

Color invert: Self explanatory.

I forget what the fourth method is... maybe it's "none"... which is what I have it set on. I've been playing tons of videogames and web-browsing on it for six months. And I'm a marathon gamer, I'll play the same game for over 12 hours non-stop. Nothing singnificant to report so far.

burn in warning in Hitachi manual?

Clint DeBoer said:
There are no burn-in issues with DLP. He is obviously confusing DLP with another technology.
Is there not a phosphor coating on the inside of the screen? I was very close to buying an LCD or DLP RPTV a few months back until I downloaded and read this in the manual for the Hitachi 50VS810 warning about viewing unstrectched 4:3 content with the black bars on the side: Use this aspect mode to display conventional (4:3) images. Side panels (gray areas) are placed to the
left and right of the image to preserve the original aspect ratio of the source. Note: Use this mode for
only 15% of your total viewing time to prevent uneven aging of the phosphors. Phosphors in the lighted
area of the picture will age more rapidly than the gray areas

Again in another section of the manual the following is stated in reference to the built in screensaver: Continuous on-screen displays such as video games, stock market quotations, computer generated graphics,
and other fixed (non-moving) patterns can cause “temporary image retention” to the LCD Rear PTV. Use the
SCREEN SAVER feature to avoid any temporary image retention. Moving picture will clear up any temporary
image retention.

Between these two comments I became concerned about the longevity of any RPTV for gaming. Am I missing something?

No, you are just reading a piss-poor users manual.

DLP & LCD have ZERO burn-in issues. Only CRT & Plasma have burn-in issues which are permanent marks on the screen that will never go away, though a negative screen can for the rest of the screen to burn in as well.

LCD has something called image retention which is NOT permanent and can be corrected by users at home for free - quite easily. The LCD builds up current inside of it and some pixels may stay partially darkened or lightened. Just leave the set off and unplugged for a couple of days and it goes away. Very - VERY - few people have ever seen LCD image retention though and those who do, just correct it, and continue enjoying their display.

Ive played games on my xbox on my projector and ive never really noticed any rainbow effect. As youve already heard here, aint no burn-in in DLP.

Clint, have you heard anything about 1080p projectors using the same DMD chip that the Samsungs are using? I have found a lot of info on the TVs from Samsung and Toshiba, but nothing regarding any projectors in the works.

BMX, are you certain LCD has no burn-in either?

LCD 100% does not have burn-in. I have seen very serious image retention issues, and I have seen it go away as well. Not an issue.

The Samsung DLP hasn't hit the streets yet has it? I would be suprised to see a 1080p DLP front proj. hit the streets before the end of this year. Not sure though.

Supposed to be released in June, but then again it was supposed to be released in Novermber 04, too.

That new DMD chip looks something nasty, cant find anything on it on the Ti or DLP pages yet, though, either.

I priced some Qualia 004 projectors and they are $30k ish .. im thinking the DLPs will be much more reasonably priced then that. The picture on my XV-Z12000 is amazing already, cant wait to actually see one a 1080p on a large projector screen.
