with the prices dropping on external drives, ive been thinking about paying the one time fee of 39.99 and hook up a terabite western dig... anyhow is it worth it? can i do anything with the shows and movies i put on the external HD... it would be nice to be able to make compilation dvds of my favorite tv shows...

Just an FYI - I think the max is 750gb. Once you record something to the drive you can ONLY view it on the DVR, and the drive cannot be used for a computer without a reformat.

I know there are 1Tb drives - but the Dish receiver maxs out at 750Gb external drive.

Don't know about transfering between Dish receivers - my initial thought is you would not be able to do it.

You also need to make sure your receiver can take an external drive - I think the 622 and 722 are the only 2 that accept it.

See here for more details.

I am considering so I can store more HD content.

I've got a Dish 622. My wife wanted to burn some of the movies we stored on the DVR to DVDs for her sister, so I bought a $99 Toshiba DVD recorder. Works fine (although not HD, of course). IMHO, the amount of storage space on the 622 is more than enough for me. Those giant add-on drives are overkill for what I require.
