Digital audio out to PC in?

Hey guys, this is my first post here in this forum. I look forward to your responses :D.

Well, our TV has a digital audio out port and no other audio out ports. My roommate has a sony shelf stereo system with a PC input (3.5mm jack) that I was hoping to connect to the tv.

My question is: What is the cheapest way (if any) to go from digital audio out on our TV to a PC in on my stereo?

There are no other audio out ports on my TV and there are no other audio inputs on the stereo.

I don't think there is currently a one step conversion, but a two step process is fine.

A tv with only a digital audio out? I've never heard of that... just curious, what brand/model of tv?

Also, what type of digital out connection is it- coaxial or optical?

The TV is a 42" Panasonic plasma 720p, sorry I don't know the model because I'm not in my room.

The digital out is optical.

Is it possible that you could go into your room and get the Model #?

Optical to 3.5mm Stereo

Here is a link to Amazon for an adapter that converts a digital optical to a 3.5mm stereo connection. I didn't even know these existed until I searched for them. Might as well give this guy a try; it's cheap and the one customer review is a positive one.

I actually don't see a headphone jack in the TV. Where would it be?

You're right, it doesnt have it. I found a couple sites that said it did.. It apparently doesnt. You need something with a digital audio converter. Its odd that your tv has no analog outputs. The easiest option would be to get a receiver. The cheapest option would be to build your own cheap DAC using chips available online...

I'll keep diggin...

Thanks adwilk. I have a question: Is the optical digital audio out the same as toslink?

Where does the signal come from for the tv? If you are using a satellite or cable box they almost always have left and right analog audio output. Get an RCA to 3.5mm stereo adapter and plug it into the Sony and bypass the tv altogether. RS and other places always have a supply of those.

There is no reciever box. It's just coming from a cable out of the wall.

This should do the trick.

I'd jump on craigslist and finding a cheap avr... heck even a pawn shop might land you a receiver cheaper than the adapter...
I have to agree with this advice. You're better off spending $100 on a receiver that has some additional utility and functionality than spending $70 on an adapter.

Although this is likely the best choice, I don't think I can justify to myself buying a $100 reciever to connect a $175 stereo to the tv.

Maybe if I can find an adapter for < $40 I'll consider it.

Is a direct adapter the only choice? Are there any options like digital audio out -> hdmi -> RCA?

I bought an RCA to 3.5mm cable when I bought the stereo because I was sure the tv should have RCA audio out.

I'll second that.

You might take a look at this HDMI adapter/converter. It outputs stereo over a 3.5mm stereo out jack.

$70 is actually a bit low of an estimate, too.

The adapter that sells for $70 will not convert signals that are output in 5.1. The model GTV-DD-2-AA adapter is around about $100.

Can anyone link me to a type of reciever that can do this conversion for me?
