Did I buy the right miniDSP?

To use REW one needs both, an SPL meter and a measurement mic. The meter is used in conjunction with a mic to calibrate the SPL reading as seen by the software/soundcard. Without performing this step, the measurements is void (for absolute level and usable only for relative level measurement).
His spl meter does have a mic out, so he could use the spl meter as his measuring mic as well, and his is so stated on the REW site. However, I would recommend a measuring mic and the spl. meter.

I would. But honestly that's one reason why I only use subs that are good to at least 200Hz. Gives you a lot more flexibility.

Interesting, though one does need a PS and such. Power-wise it's about the same as this IRS2092-based board. Though I don't trust that any of the various amp kit boards are rated accurately.
If you have adequate power they will do the job they are rated for. This is the spec of the chip. Of course pushing the envelope is always a bad idea.

Well it was known to happen that a medical student or resident would not be prepared, and ask questions he/she could easily have found the answer to.

If this seemed a perpetual problem, the student would be invited to my office for a conversation about life long learning and related issues especially about preparing your ground.

Let me give you just one example. You asked what is REW? If you put REW in your browser it comes right up. The information on that site also answers your follow up questions.

Inertia,
Using REW with the Mini DSP is explained on their website. Further, the REW online help needs to read and steps understood, before you start using it. Last but not the least, with more power comes more responsibility. Use the eq with caution since it is easy to overcompensate and end up with worse results than before.
