Get Basic HP or Dell from Fry's

Go to Fry's or Dell online. Get thier on-sale special.

Get 15 " screen bright screen on hP
at least 250 gig hard drive
at least 2 Gig memory ( 3 or 4 better if with Vista, 2 okay with Windows7)
default video/graphics card id okay
default CPU is okay.

If she is going to do excell or word., the office 2007 student suite.

need some kind of antivirus software if connecting to internet. McAfee okay but need to havecontract active after trial period. I like Symantec better.

Also you might consider loading the two free Spyware and Grayware . Lavasoft - Ad-Aware (Free version) and Spybot - Search and Destroy (Free is still best but be careful of the wanna-bes)

If wireless - enable WEP or WPA and secure the router

Turns out that our retired nurse actually needs to knock down some credit card debt more than she needs a computer. It was fun looking though and the thread is still a good resource.
