Denon AVR-X4000 issue

Hey all, was setting up my new tv stand. Almost done and was checking all my sources to make sure I had everything reconnected right when the receiver shut off. Fast blinking red power light. Checked all speaker connections (banana plugs on both ends), and no stray wires or anything. Turned it back on and it went right off again with a fast flashing red light. Disconnected everything, removed power cord for 5 minutes. Only plugged in the power cord, turned it on, and it shuts off again.

For automatic shutoff with a red blinking light every 0.5 seconds the manual says:

• Check the speaker connection. The protection circuit may have been activated because speaker cable core wires came in contact with each other or a core wire was disconnected from the connector and came in contact with the rear panel of this unit. After unplugging the power cord, take corrective action such as firmly re-twisting the core wire or taking care of the connector, and then reconnect the wire.

• Turn down the volume and turn on the power again.

• This unit’s amplifier circuit has failed. Unplug the power cord and contact our customer service center.

Did a factory reset and with only the power cord plugged in it still turns itself off and gives a flashing red light every 0.5 seconds. Is it dead Jim?

Doesn't sound good if it does that with only a power cord hooked up....and you already did the factory reset (kinda surprised you had enough time to initiate it, which was a problem I had on one of the Denon refurbs I had....it just shut off so quickly there was nothing I could do but return it). Curious, was all turned off/disconnected before you started re-arranging?

Yeah, everything was off and disconnected. It was running for a good 20 minutes too before it shut itself off the first time.

It was running happily and I went to put the final shelf on the entertainment center since it was easier to connect everything without the top shelf on and that's when it crapped out. I initially thought I had somehow bumped the power button by accident.

Nope, last AVR before this was from 1999. That never made it out here in the move.

Time for another AVR. How old is this X4000? 4 years?

You going to try another brand or stick with Denon?

I keep hearing... somewhere... about the 3500 being a great deal right now. Might serve well as a stopgap for only $550!
And, it is Audyssey XT32.
Might be a good stopover considering we don’t know yet the new round of gear coming out this Summer.
...now where have I kept hearing people talk about the 3500??? I’ll get back to you if I can find that link.

I'm going to bring the X4000 into work and we'll troubleshoot it here, see if we can narrow it down to an amp section that we can replace.

If anyone can bring it back, it will be the techs at work! We (well, they) fix MW amplifiers all the time. How hard can it be to fix a less than kilowatt amp?

I'll let you all know if it lives again some day.

Mind you it may not be the amp that failed at all. I could be the protection system's hardware and/or software that went nuts.

From my conversation with the service tech that worked on my SR6012, the minor protection like heat will reset once the problem is gone (ie, let the device cool down), but the major protection is not reset-able. Once it drops, it has to be unlocked by a tech before anything else can be done.

I would be more concerned about failed ICs, likely difficult to troubleshoot and most likely pretty much impossible to replace.

Me too, unfortunately if it is the protective system acting up, it will most likely involved one or more IC, including the CPU. If he could get the unit to remained on for a few seconds, there may be enough time to punch in the sequence to display the fault history. The service manual will have the sequence that typically involve pressing several buttons at the same time or in a specific order.

Hopefully it is just one power amp channel that would be easy to replace, or may even be just the output devices that need to be changed.
