I watched Lone Survivor last night and I did not find quite what you said. A ton of shooting for sure but virtually nothing fron the surround speakers. The ARV said it was PCM in 2 channel. I watched it from Dish and on demand.
Ok. If it said 2ch pcm, what you were listening to was either like a 2 channel stereo presentation, and surround. First thing to do is check the settings in your dish receiver. You have to allow Dolby digital and pcm(iirc). My dish stb also has a setting for dynamic range.(low for tv speakers and high for audio systems). Then watch it again but make sure your Denon is NOT set to 2ch pcm. It should be set for “Dolby digital” I believe. Or “multichannel”. I don’t currently have a Denon so I’m not sure. Hopefully one of the guys can fill in those blanks. You then hear bullets a voices and things all over.

I will try this straight away -- thanks.

I know the Hopper is set for Dolby and PCM but was unaware of the dynamic range setting. The AVR is set to Dolby Surround. I see the manual talks about an auto function but I did not see than in the setup ... will look again.

Better to find the movie with the actual 5.1 presentation rather than 2ch pcm (unless it was your Dish set top box that was only providing pcm 2.0). Not familiar with Dish settings in any case (with Directv you choose DD on or off, off giving only 2ch pcm and there's no option to make it easier for tv speakers), but doesn't the information about the movie indicate what specific audio it is providing?

I rechecked everything today and played the movie. In the AVR under information/audio it shows whatever mode I have set which was Dolby Surround. I can set that to multi chanel, dolby, DTS Netural:X
Under that is input signal it shows PCM
Under that isThe number of input signal channels (presence of front, surround, LFE).
Mine shows 2/0/.1

I ran the trailer of the movie from Amazon Video and it was the same.

I don't have Netflix yet

I usually use Netflix, HBO or Amazon Prime. I did try Hulu recently and 5.1 programs it only had in 2.0 so I cut it off at the end of the trial.

I did try and see what dish lists for audio format in the description for Lone Survivor but I can’t seem to find it. Dish used to be really good about the audio info.
Not sure you would enjoy the content but I’m currently watching King Arthur: legend of the sword on dish(dvr). My avr is set to DD and it’s display shows 5.1 in and out. This film has an amazing soundtrack full of surround subtlety, with sounds swirling all around. Especially as it carries on. One scene in the middle has a “warning shot” that on screen is very high and to the left. Even in 5.1 on my 7.3 channel system(don’t like PLIIx) this effect is placed accurately.(sounds like its above and left) Fwiw, I enjoy this film a lot and the soundtrack is especially fun. Very well done. Imo

I will have a look at the film to check.

I just watched Jack Reacher on Amazon Prime Video. That movie is inDolby Digital and Dolby Atmos but Amazon delivered it in 2 channel PCM! I checked a couple others on Amazon with the same result. So.... it "appears" that Amazon is down mixing the audio.

It may simply be your app. I use Amazon Prime also and Jack Reacher Never Go Back (assume that's the one you mean as Jack Reacher is a rental now) on my Fire Stick I just played for a bit and is in Dolby Digital +

I’m gonna take a shot in the dark at maybe a settting issue or as @lovinthehd said your app. I’ve used Netflix and amazon before with(compression aside) pretty good results regarding multichannel playback. Also try john wick films.

I watched it with the Roku (new unit) and Amazon prime app on it.

Well it wouldn't surprise me that the Amazon Prime app on the Amazon device might be getting something beyond the apps on other devices....but are you sure you have your audio output settings correct? Never used a Roku myself so not sure what's involved. Is your Roku connected directly to your avr? If connected to your tv the tv may be the bottleneck for what it can pass on to your avr....

The Roku is direct to the AVR and it is programmed correctly. I even uninstalled the app and reinstalled it - no dice. My old Roku was terrific.
