Little measurement data is presented but the reviewers can't say enough good about the 4806, claiming it surpases anything else they have tested (including in some ways the 5805).
Maybe the German-English translator is hosed, but I beleive it reads the 4806 amp is more dynamic and "faster". Thats pretty funny and of course untrue. The only major advantages of the 4806 over the 5805 are: cost and analog video upconversion to HDMI with OSD (5805 will be firmware upgraded for this soon).

I'm researching a new receiver to use as a pre-pro. The Yamaha RX-V4600 and the Denon 4806 are the top two contenders.

My question regards the pre-amp section of the 4806.

In the RX-V4600 review:

At 2Vrms, the preamp section of the RX-V4600 faltered. This is because Yamaha was likely using only a single rail 5V supply for the preamp section. I would prefer to see a preamp have the ability of driving 2Vrms undistorted to accommodate a wider assortment of power amplifiers. Though this didn't present any audible nasties when I used the RX-V4600 as a preamp to my Emotiva MPS-1 power amp, my advice here is to choose a power amp that can achieve maximum power output with about a 1.5Vrms input should you decide on buttressing your system with external amplification.

From the Denon 5805 review:

When I drove the analog preamp to over double the voltage required to achieve max gain of most power amps (4Vrms) distortion levels were very commendable (+12.096 + 84.466)dBv = 96.562dBv or 100*alog(-96.562/20) = .00149%!

Q. Is the 4806 pre-amp section similar to the 5805 or closer to the 3805 which was described as more noisy than a Yamaha 2500.

The 3805 will also work as well, though I feel the 2500 preamp section is a tad less noisey which may or may not be an audible issue depending on the sensitivity of your speakers and their proximity to the listening position. If your speakers are under 92dB SPL @ 1 watt/meter and the rears are at least 6ft away, it should work fine.

Denon 4806 Remote

I just upgraded my Yamaha DSP-1 to the Denon 4806 to take advantage of the HDMI swithching to connect my Mitusbishi 63 inch LCD, Panasonic HDMI DVD, and Directv HDMI HD-DVR. I am having some difficulty programming what appears to be the great Denon remote. Does anyone have any tips on how to accomplish this, or know the codes for the Directv HD-DVR?

The manual bounces around a lot and the remote doesn't seem to respond to the commands in the manual.

I would appreciate any tips.

My first post. I sometimes find answers to different topics by using Google or Dogpile. I have a Denon 4306 on order from Crutchfield and shipping has been delayed three times. Anyone hear if Denon is having problems with this receiver? Thanks

Dnon AVR-4806 HDMI Video Conversion Tech Help

I apologize in advance for I only know enough to be dangerous...

Just got my 4806 and am hooking it up. The Auto EQ couldn't be easier! Unfortunately, the HDMI Video Upconversion doesn't appear to be highly intuitive, and the manual doesn't help much...

I am trying to run the HDMI from my cable box through the receiver, as well as convert to HDMI from my Component cables on my DVD player. So far no picture with either the TV or the DVD...

HDMI from the cable box is in HDMI1. Cable from receiver HDMI Out goes to the TV. DVD Component cables in Component 1 input.

OSD Settings:
#4 Video Setup: Screen 4-1: HDMI/DVI In Assign, TV is set to HDMI1. Screen 4-2: Component in Assign set to 1RCA for the DVD. Screen 4-3: Video Convert Mode DVD is set to Component, TV: Auto (s-video and video are the only other settings...). 4-4:HDMI Out Setup is set to ON, Color Space set to YCbCr, RGB Mode Setup to Normal.

What am I doing wrong?

aaazdaddy,
Reading through the manual your setup appears correct. Hopefully you've been trying to troubleshoot the problem. Sorry I'm not much help.
