Denon AVR-3806, Any trick to using headphones?

Just bought 3806 from CraigsList Saturday, tested it (on speakers) with my own CD deck.
Now trying to use cans with 3.5mm plug. Cans+3.5mm work fine in my Galaxy phone,
I plug 3.5mm into a phono adapter, adapter into 3806 'PHONES' jack, press SOURCE,
turn knob to CDR/tape, Master Volume to 15dB -- no sound. Am using same CD deck
as worked with speakers, same RCA cord, plugged into CD jack on back of 3806.
Using same volume setting on cans (max) as worked on Galaxy.

Is there something I'm missing, like a headphone output-level control on the 3806?

Yes, like Wayne said - just use 1/4 to 3.5mm adapter (I live ones made of metal - these last longer - check monoprice) - headphones plug would be on the front panel
Plugging in headphones would mute your main speakers and main volume control will control the headphones output level.

Hmm that sounds like what he did altho he used the phrase phono adapter (phono plugs are often considered rca's) and was thinking he was using the phono input for a second as well but maybe OP should clarify with just what exact converter/adapter he's using to convert the 3.5mm to 1/4" jack.

Could be that on this old unit that function no longer works for some reason but you might also check to make sure nothing is physically inside the headphone jack on the avr preventing a good connection (like lint for example).

ps Do the speakers turn off when you have the headphones plugged into the avr? Both pre-outs and speakers should turn off when engaging the headphones per the manual...

Yes, I was referring to wikipediaBACKSLASHwBACKSLASHindex.phpQMARKtitle=TRS_connector , AKA 1/4-inch;
i.e., that's the jack behind the faceplate, and that's the kind of 3.5mm adapter I'm using.
-- And yes, it's a nice, shiny, clean, uncorroded, all-metal one.

Now that that's cleared-up, can anyone suggest why it's not working?
-- The cans are brand-new.
-- There are no speakers connected, and the main volume control is what I'm using for gain.
-- I felt and heard the jack click, and the "H/P Input On" msg did appear.
-- Also getting no sound when Tuner is selected, not even "no-such-station" hiss or static.

This product is so complex, I can't help but feeling that there's some "working as designed" explanation.

Also, just now blew out the 3806's headphone jack with compressed-air duster, no change.
Then tried some different brand-new cans (A-T) which have their own proprietary cord requiring no adapter.
No change.
btw, both sets of can work fine in the headphone jack built-in with the CD deck.

sorry, can't open your link (too lazy to format it manually, besides it's wikipedia - it's a bit too generic)
this is specifically the adapter you should be using:
https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=7169
Notice amount of contacts - two black separators and a total of 3 contact zones. Three shall be the number of counting and the number of the counting shall be three.

Honestly, if this doesn't work, while you do have sound from main speakers with headphones disconnected, I suspect there's a fault in the receiver somewhere.

Forum software left me no choice but to hack the link ("you have too few posts").

I've got the right one. I've been using these things since long before there was any other kind for cans
and the number of the counting shall be three.
MP?

Ooops, just now realized you had a clickable link in "Three". Those things should be more contrast-y !.
Yeah, you're not the first to complain about it. basically, admins are clueless on how to change it. It came after latest forum update.
As for your issue, my bet is on either loose wiring or component fault. Maybe some simple like leaking caps?

I'd open the cover and visually inspect it first. I did plasma TV repair solely based on youtube videos (granted I could already solder pretty well)

Sounds like the avr has issues, no headphone ouput and a non functioning tuner? Did you do a microprocessor reset? Often a good first step with a used avr.
