Got this unit yesterday and I can't get any sound out of the main section. Tried tons of different setting but can't get a single noise to come out of anything but the zone 2 and 3 outputs. Speaker terminals or the preamps aren't working and I'm not sure what else to try.

Also the audyssey setup isn't running, have the mic setup and it won't go any further than the home screen.

Just wondering if anyone has a lot of experience with this amplifier and any help anyone could give me, thanks!

Get out your manual and methodically go through the set up item by item. You need to post back and state at what point set up fails.

Have you ever set up an AVR before or pre/pro?

We need a lot more information from you to help trouble shoot your problem.

These set ups are very complex and if you have not done it before, will take you a day to a day and a half. The set up has to be very methodical.

Your problem is far more likely than not to be user error.

Did you buy it brand new or refurbished from Ecost/Dakmart?

It is a brand new unit from amazon. And so far I hooked up all the speakers and the pre outs to my front channels. Then I plugged in and aux red white to play my iPod just to see if it works and I could onlybget sound out of my surround back speakers with zone 2 and 3 on. Absolutely nothing out of any other channels. I am going through the manual and it shows what I should do but it just isn't working.

I guess I'm just worried it might be DOA, does this happen with brand new items from amazon though?

Any unit from anyone can be DOA, but we are a long way from proclaiming your unit DOA.

Have you owned modern AV gear before? We do need to know this.

Units are no longer plug and play. All of these types of units produce no sound to your speakers out of the box.

You have to go through the set up menus and screens obsessionally. One mistake and you have nothing. Even one of our experienced mods, made a mistake with a set up not long ago, and we had a bit of time sorting it out long range.

We don't know if you have even assigned speakers and gone through the set up menu for instance.

You must post your set up steps, and then we will download your manual and check on your steps.

We had a poster not long ago that was totally incapable of doing his set up, after lots of patient help. In the end I had to tell him to return his gear and just be happy with a TV.

There are no short cuts, set up has to be done carefully and correctly.

If you are new to modern AV receivers you need to read your manual start to finish probably six times or more before you understand it.

I consider myself experienced but when I bought my Marantz pre/pre and OPPO BD 83, I downloaded the manuals long before arrival of the gear and committed the important parts to memory. It pays off and set up went like a breeze.

You have given us no useful information to allow us help you so far.

I just upgraded from a pioneer vsx-919ah-k which I had operating perfectly.

So to start off this install, I took the denon out of the box and plugged my center, surround and surround back channels to the binding posts, and then hooked up my front pre outs to my emotiva bpa1 external amplifier. Then hooked up my blu Ray to the 1st hdmi input labeled DVD on the unit, and then the hdmi out to my tv. Finally I connected a red white to headphone Jack to the VCR input on the 3310, and then proceeded to setup.

First I tried running the audyssey program, setup the mic and tried to start it, however the screen would freeze at the point where you are supposed to select the first settings of the audyssey. So then I figured I would try manual setup, and first set the amp assign to main(front, center, surround and 2 surround backs). Then I made sure all of the other default settings were correct, but when I got to the channel level option where it is supposed to play test tones, it played no test tones out of any speakers. And now I'm here trying to get any sort of sound in any combination of inputs but can only get sound out of zone 2 and 3.

Thanks for the detailed response! All help is greatly appreciated, I wouldn't consider myself a beginner, but I have some experience in hooking up all kind of stereos.

That helps. I will download your manual later tonight and get out the wet towel.

In the meantime I would reset the receiver and start again.

I personally do not use Audyssey until after doing a manual set up.

Do your input assignments correctly and then do your speaker set up.

If you can't get tones through the speakers then, you may have a major problem.

You are stuck with Denon support!

There is no download of the user manual for what appears to be a very obtuse device.

I have searched high and low on their site for a complete user manual. Did you ever try and download a manual before you purchased it?

I can only download a quick set up guide that is next to useless for a device that complex, and a 22 page addendum to the owners manual. As is usual with Denon/Marantz this latter is not in the Queen's English but some ghastly Asian pigeon rendition of the English language.

Another thing, the published specification is woefully inadequate, especially as regards amplifier specification.

From the addendum I do have a hint of what may be your problem. This obtuse device can run height and front wide speakers, but no surrounds at the same time. If it is set up as 7.1 the front wide and height can not be used.

Now this requires and extra set up that I have not seen before. You have to set specific amps to specific output terminals. I'm wondering if this is a step you missed.

Quite honestly that receiver is a device I would run a mile from, and frankly I would go on a slow walk to the best of them and go into reverse gear when confronted by most.

If after doing a reset and setting everything up again, you can not even get tones to the speakers, I would give Denon support one chance to solve you problem.

If you can not get satisfaction at that point, I would return the unit and get something more suitable. I would definitely steer clear of front wide and height nonsense since it is not discrete anyway.

Front wide makes no sense at all. Just put your mains further apart. Most people on these forums have their mains far too close together anyway. Any decent set of stereo speakers should be able to project seem less images with spacings up to 12 to 14 ft. Optimal spacing for stereo speakers is 8 to 14 ft. I have found 10 to 12 ft generally works best.

Height would make some sense if it was discrete, but front wide in a domestic situation no way.

Ya I have it off the front height mode and on normal main 7.1 mode for the amp assign feature, still no test tones. I have a multimeter I use for car stereos, not sure if thAt would help any here to determine if the main amp section is dead.

Assuming I do end up returning it, what would be other good choices. All I need is some good clean power, at least 2 pre outs and hdmi connectivity.

Also, does denon claim warranty on items bought from unauthorized dealers?

If you bought that from an unauthorized dealer, then you have NO warranty. You will be at the mercy of the dealer you bought it from to get reimbursed. If the dealer was unauthorized you probably have a highly suspect gray market product.

Be prepared for a total loss if you bought from an unauthorized dealer. Marantz/Denon are highly protective of their authorized dealers.

I'm not going to recommend a receiver others can do that. I personally have never owned a receiver and hope I never will.

If you bought it DIRECTLY from amazon.com, you have 30 days to return a defective receiver for free.

Okay, unhook all components.

Just hook the main front speakers + surround speakers and turn off the zone 2 & 3. Just turn on the main zone.

If there is a reset function like my Denon 5308, then reset the receiver.

Now immediately run the manual speaker channel set up - you should hear the pink noise for each channel. If you don't, then the unit is DOA.

Return it immediately.
