Well i am curious what everyone thinks about this reciever. I seriously wanted a pioneer elite but couldn't find a new one cheap enough for my budget. I picked it up from a best buy for $529. It was marked down from $849 to $599 as clearance from the new 2311CI. Plus i got another 70 taken off for buying there only open box item which they had to find. Now i know i could have gotten it for cheaper online. But i like dealing with real people and to be able to easily return something if needed. And i didnt wanna wait for shipping.

Most everyone seems to love Denon. Though this is the first one me or anyone i personally know has owned. And the first time i have even looked at there electronics. So im basically curious to see what people have to say about this reciever thanks

Your query is curious to me. Aren't you putting the cart before the horse? Not to be snotty, but you've already bought the unit. What does it matter what other people think of it. The real question is, "What do you think of it?".

Indeed. However i only really bought it because i felt i got a good deal..

Idont know anything about denon's , and i have a 30 day return period. So even though i have already pulled the trigger i could return it. Just curios what ones more experianced than myself could tell me about the brand, value, and possibly anything about Denon receivers or this exact model that the avg consumer may not know, that would be useful in set up, config, or anything thing else that would be of intrest

It's a great AVR and Denon is the only AVRs I use now.

Ask specific questions that you run into as you set up and we will help you.

I am glad you posted this thread because I was wanting to post something along the same line. I saw a Pioneer Elite VSX-21 THX open box at BB for $549 +plus tax and I saw the same Denon you bought for $488 no tax and free shipping. I have never owned a Denon or an Elite for that matter but I really wanted an Elite, but now thinking it over I think I want the Denon the Anchor Bay is nice but not really needed, but the Auddessy multi EQ really sounds like something I could use. How do you like that aspect? anyone have any thoughts on which receiver is the better buy? Sorry don't mean to hi-jack your thread but it all seems related. Good luck with your new toy and tell us more about what you like about it. Does it ROCk?

I just bought one too, can't beat $488 and free shipping.

I am going to give it to my brother in law since he is still using my 20 year old Pioneer I gave him.

Ya i saw that deal too but i was impatient and didn't wanna wait for shipping. and i like ease of dealing with a storefront. But to be honest if i could have got that elite for the same price i would have went with the pioneer. Not for any specific technical reason. But i like the look and style of the the elites, and for me it seems more people have denon's or onkyo and i like to be different.

However my 3 day's of ownership have been good. I used the set up mic and got my basic adjustments done. renaming my inputs, turning up my center channel a bit more.(i hate when dialog is quiet and you cant understand it.) Set up was easy really and allows you to set the mic in several different "listening" locations so everyone gets good audio

I have ran into a few issues: first was that the GUI was not displaying correctly and the box that shows your volume as your adjust it would be black and white like static. and pressing the input or any other button resulted in the same black/white static look. I turned off the AVR and when i turned it back on it was fine.

Second issue was with my XBOX360 with certain setting for the upconverting feature enabled it was distorting my on screen coloring. Did some adjustments and i havent had an issue since.

Though something i found annoying while attemping to fix the 360 issue is if i turned the up converting off completely and used the GUI it would blank out the picture and go to the GUI... Where as before you could always see you pause screen or where ever you were at in the xbox. with the GUI interface over top of it.

Oh and as for a specific question. Its my understanding that the Denon models with four digits AVR-XXXXCI ect ect are there high end stuff compared to there 3 digit models AVR-XXXCI.. And if so what kinda difference's are we talking.

And are Discrete amplifers. They was i understood the sales guy was that that ment each channel was amplified seperatly were cheap AVR's just use one big Amp

Well I am no expert on Denon but when you see Anchor Bay in the specs, or when they bother to list by name the processing chipset and you have heard of it, you are probably looking at a higher end model. Also the Multi-EQ gets high marks. I have heard (hearsay not experience) that it outperforms Pioneers equivalent.

I was wondering what your impressions of the power output and sound quality were? I really don't know what to believe in terms of power ratings for these receivers I have been looking at. I have an older Onkyo that supposed to be a 100 watts per channel and I have to crank it to 80% just to hear it over the faucet in the next room. Is this your first receiver with the new HD audio? how much of an upgrade over the SD dolby and DTS would you say it is?

I was looking it over again and it looks like you need to run an HDMI out the front to get the on screen GUI is that right? I am glad that it has a GUI but it already has HDMI out to the tv why do you have to run a seperate cable out the front? that is retarded if that is the case. Let me know about that if you can. It isn't a deal breaker but it seems poorly thought through if I am right. Wouldn't it be better through the tv so that you can access it on the fly when you need to rather than getting up and switching a bunch of cables around? yikes!

No if you are running a video out from the AVR HDMI or other, it will display the GUI on screen.

Yes this is my first serious and modern reciever. My other ones were a Kenwood VR-307 and a Sony DT455.. I dont remember the exact model number of the sony. SO far though sound is cleaner and the bass is hitting harder.

oh good, I am glad to be wrong about that. I was looking at the picture of the receiver and I thought there was an output for the gui on the front? or maybe that is just there (if it is there?) for convenience if you are going to plug it into a pc or something...not sure...I am confused and chaos is my evil overlord. :D

On the front for conectivity there is the input for the audessy set up mic

1 RCA, 1 S-video, 1 optical, and the headphones.

The 4 digit and 3 digit models are basically the same with some minor differences.

This website explains the differences:

Onkyo has THX in its features at a price for 899 (model 708)
does it make this better over denon model AVR - 2311c which has the same price.

there are a lot of receivers that meet and/or exceed THX specs but aren't THX certified as a cost savings measure since it costs so much to have a product certified.

I'm looking at the Onkyo 708, Onkyo 808, Denon 1911, Denon 2311, am I comparing the right models?

Anyone have any insight to these?
