Ok so another question about the 4520, "still learning" I used to run a hdmi to my TV from the cable box then a optical from the TV to avr "non hdmi avr". So now with the new denon all my hdmi cables run to it and one from it to my tv. The problem is I have Netflix and amazon on my TV and I'm not sure how the arc works. I thought the arc would carry the audio back from my TV to the avr but it doesn't seem to. So my question is should it or do I still need to just use an optical wire from tv to avr? I have the hdmi plugged into port 1 on my tv which says arc right next to it, my tv is a pannasonic tc-p58vt25. Thanks for any help.
Yes, ARC enabled HDMI should carry audio back "upstream" from the TV to the AVR for processing. A separate cable is not required. You need to go into the Panny's menu to it's HDMI control section (Panasonic call it Viera Link I think) and enable it's audio function. You may have to do similar in the Denon, so it recognises the Panasonic as an (audio) input when required, as well as an output. You may have to switch everything OFF then ON again to get the HDMI to "handshake" after you make any changes to HDMI control.

If you enable full HDMI control on the Panny and Denon, you should be able to hit the ON button on any input device (including the TV) and the device, AVR and the TV will fire up and all the correct outputs and inputs will be selected automatically.

That's a good find PENG.

Mainly for benefit of any Australians reading along... Audio Products Group used to put a lot of effort into their excellent Denon comparison sheets and product information like that. I say "used to" because APG's home A/V distribution lines were taken over by a mob called QualiFi about 18 months (?) ago. The sum total of Qualifi's information about Denon consists of a link back to the DENON AU | Home Page. Fairly piss poor actually.

Ok so I can get the TV and denon avr to link as far as power on and off and even volume on tv remote will turn up and down the avr but still no sound from avr when trying to play netflix, youtube, or Amazon from tv. I gave the avr set as default sound in the TV and I turned on what was needed in the denon avr, looks like I will be going back to the old optical cable..... so much for arc on hdmi.

Hmmm... What about normal OTA TV programs, does the Denon receive audio from the Panny for it?

I don't know my catv goes out of my cable box via hdmi, the only thing I need the arc for is the streaming stuff from the panny..

So as a sort of update, the more I use and get used to the denon the more I am really liking it. XT32 made a big difference in my room with movie surround it's much improved. Now I just can't wait till I can upgrade my sub!!!
