Ok it's in and hooked up and I know I have a learning curve still but I'm gonna say so far I love it. I do have a few quick questions , my old onkyo no hdmi I used optical while playing a movie would tell you on screen if it was dolby digital or dts the denon just says multi chanel in while playing different movies, does it not tell you the format or is something not right? My other question was regarding the audyssey seeming to set my sub very low or I used to have it real hot lol. Thanks for any info.
1. Multichannel: Your player is decoding the audio and sending multichannel PCM via the HDMI output. If you want the Denon to display the audio format, you have to let it do the decoding. To do this, just go into your player's menu and set the HDMI output to "Bitstream".
2. Sub level: This is fairly common feedback from new Audyssey users. It's usually because Audyssey's filters clean up the bass response so well, there's much less boominess and overhang, making the bass sound like it's at a reduced level. Audyssey is also setting the sub's level trim according to film reference level, which results the Denon's -30dBFS internal test noise measuring an average of 75dBSPL (C-weighted) at the first measurement position. This is simply
reference. If your
preference is hotter sub output, by all means turn it up, but at least you have a reference setting to come back to if you need to. It might also pay to check the Denon's LFE level settings to make sure there's no silly default turning down the LFE channel output by 5 or 10dB.
