Denon 3805 died, UPS dropped it

Got a call from Don today at Classic Stereo. He said he's filling out the paperwork on the Denon. Asked what I wanted to do. I told him to just send me the insurance money of $750, that I would buy a newer unit when they come out. He said that was fine, and would keep me updated on the claim process. He said this is getting old. He needs to switch shippers.

Am I nuts for not requesting a credit on the repair work for $130 plus the $750? He did rebuild the amp and repaired the unit for a reasonable cost. I feel it was my fault for not telling him to insure the unit for $880 (cost plus repair), but what do I know?

Good news:D Did you have to discuss this with them much, whether they would send the insurance to you?

I doubt you can claim that repair bill. He did fix the problem as best you know.

You are not being nuts but just being nice and reasonable. He should have asked if you wanted it insured, but I guess he just didn't think of it. Are you going to get a 3806 now? I think it is one to two lbs heavier!

Personally I think you're gonna have to eat the $130. Or think of like this, you are getting $620 for the unit and $130 for the work, for a total of $750. Whichever makes you feel better. Either way, it's better than if there was no insurance.

Out of curiosity, if you hadn't of insured it, how much would Classic Stereo have insured it for? I'm fairly positive they would have put some insurance on it to protect themselves. Or did they ask you how much you wanted and it was all on you?

I'm glad it you're getting the money without hassle. What happens to the unit now? Does Classic Stereo get it for parts or does UPS keep it? If Classic Stereo gets it, ask them to send it to you. Maybe you can salvage something for later use.

Since Classic Stereo is doing the right thing, I would feel better about continuing a relationship with them and when you are ready to get another AVR give them a shot at making you a decent deal.

Now that you are not forced to take them up on their offer for a new one it makes sense to take their deal if they have the receiver you want.

Hi buck, glad to hear its all working out,i think your out the $130.00 repair bill as he did affect the repair plus he can only claim the insured value, its good to hear he was honest.

Switching shippers will do him no good though, its pot luck with all the shipping companies, just so you know had this been with fedex the claims process is slower & with the usps its even slower, ups pays the fastest with the least paperwork.

Any time there is a full payout for the maximum insured value ups will ask for the damaged goods back & send a truck to pick it up so they can resell the stuff at auctions, this only applies to claims that reach full insurance value.

I don't mind eating the $130 - I would have been out that money anyhow.

That's a good question. I told them I insured it for $750 when I shipped it, and total shipping was around $15. I told him to make sure it was insured coming back as well, as I had a vintage Pioneer unit damaged by Fed Ex and they had to pay up on a claim. I probably should have let them decide how much to insure the unit for. I think Fed Ex took 2 weeks to pay the claim.

In any event, I knew in the long run if I had a net of at least $600, I could replace the unit with a used or refurbished unit of equal value. I didn't even consider insuring the unit for the 3806's MSRP of $1299, as the 3805 has been discoutinued for quite some time. I think the last time I spoke with
Don, he said UPS would have paid for the replacement's actual cost which blew me away. That may have amounted to an additional $4 of insurance.

The lesson here is to make sure you send your busted unit to a reputable dealer, and to overinsure it just in case you run into a situation like mine. Definitely take HighFi's advice and request shipping be handled by you BOTH ways. I got lucky and have a dealer that actually cares to contact me. I don't have money in hand, but hopefully I'll have something in a month. I'll keep up on this thread.
