I've been looking to get a new DVD player for some time and think I'm ready to do so. I'd been spying the Denon 2910 for some time as a great unit with price-to-performance aspects. It has SACD and DVD-A as well as a rep of being a great DVD player, all for ~$500, depending on where you get it (i've been considering eBay and used). At any rate, I was poking around and notice the 1920 is now selling which also does DVD-A and SACD and is around $200 cheaper. Now, $200 isn't a ton of cash, but it's a nice chunk of change and I was wondering, does the 2910 justify the extra cabbage? I compared the 2 at Denon and the differences were minimum...the 2910 had "Noise Shaped Video - Interlace and Progressive" (whatever that means), as well as an 8MB buffer vs. 2MB on the 1920. Bass Management was the same on both units. They both offer Burr-Brown audio DAC's, though there is a difference: a PCM 1791 on the 2910; a PCM 1738 on the 1920. The 2910 has an HDCD decoder, but that factor makes no difference as my receiver (Marantz SR8400) has a built in HDCD decoder. The 2910 offers a Pure Direct mode. Also, the weight was significantly more on the 2910 (12.1 lbs vs. 6.4 lbs). But other than that, the players were pretty much the same. Which makes me wonder...is it the performance, specifically the video performance, that is the biggest difference bt. the 2? I don't know...just trying to make a purchase. If I can save $200, that'd be sweet...but at the same time, if the performance is significantly better, then I'd consider that $200 well spent. Anyone with any info/comparisons on these units? Thanks.

If you're looking for better audio performance, I'd go with the 2910. If you are just looking for a good DVD player and hires audio is just a bonus, then go with the 1920. If you want a warranty, go with the 1920.

I had a 2200, and recently replaced it with a used 2900 and I have to say, the 2200 gave me 90% of the performance of the 2900, with audio being noticably improved, but not earth shatteringly so. To me the 2900 wasn't worth the extra $450 when they were new.

i was going to post a new thread but since this one is close......

Here is my delimna, I desperately (realtive term) need a DVD Player. I have a Denon 2910 receiver (Boston Accousitc and Paradigm speakers). I would like the DVD Player to be DVD Audio and SACD capable. Both Video and Audio performance are imprtant to me. I was goin to go with the Denon 2910 but it is pricey, considering 1) HD-DVD players next year and 2) the new Denon 1920 would seemingly suffice. I am also willing to go with another brand, the cheaper the better seeing that this will be a holdover player.

Anyone have recommendations?
Should I even bother waiting for HD DVD Players?

Performance v. Price ratio is most important to me. I watch movies more than listen to music, but audio perfomance is more importa

If you're planning on buying it local, check with the store you are going to purchase from on their return policy and see if you can bring home the 1920 and if you're happy with it, you're done. If you DON'T like it, maybe they will let you trade it in towards the 2910. That's basically what happened to me; I bought a DVD-910 and I was not pleased with it, so I returned it for credit towards the 2200 instead.
