DD/ DTS signal not being detected

Hi all,
I use a Denon AVR1403 5.1 receiver and a Samsung DVD player. Both are about three years old. When I use the coaxial connection, the Dolby Digital and DTS signals are not being recognised. The other DSP modes like Pro Logic and virtual surround etc are working fine. I changed the coaxial cable and tried several DVDs. The same problem exists. One thing I noticed is that the DVD player's RCA sockets appear to be weak and the picture flickers and sound distorts when I handle the RCA plugs. Has my DVD player past its life or has my receiver gone kaput? Thanks for any inputs.

Seriously, I have no life.

Is this a new problem? You indicate that when you move the cables the video and audio has problems.

Sounds like you have a cold joint someplace on the back of the DVD player, or could be a cable issue?
Have you tried another set of cables? If that is not it, it is your player.

Make sure that the DVD player is set up to output DD and DTS as "bitstream" and not "PCM". If it's set up for "PCM", then those audio tracks will be interpreted as stereo (or Pro-Logic). If you had set it to "bitstream" before but the DVD player had power removed from it, it very likely would have reset back to the factory defaults.

Actually, both of you were right. The DVD player was set to PCM and the DTS and DD output was off. I set them to bitstream and it works fine now.

Also, the RCA plug (coaxial output) which is soldered to the PCB on the player looked all cracked. So, I resoldered it. It works better now.

Thanks so much guys for your inputs. I really could not sleep properly last night thinking how much I might have to spend for repairing the receiver. Anyway, I plan to change the DVD player too. I might buy a Sony or Philips since I am on a budget at the moment.

Cheers,
Vivek
