Current ET- HT setup

How do you fix a leaky room or Treat This?!

What a long strange trip it’s been. Some of us have to make do with the available space and try to create a HT environment. It is much easier if you start with good bones i.e. correct room dimensions and have the freedom to treat the space to optimize the audio and video quality. Unfortunately, I have neither of these. What I have is some rather nice equipment thrown into a family living space that is hostile to optimizing its performance.

It took my hearing a really well thought out and engineered HT room for me to realize the limitations that my space imposes. The differences are subtle to some and more pronounced to others, but the sonic benefits of a properly treated space are significant and undeniable.

For me the only way I will get to where I want to go with this "hobby" is to build a dedicated space. That is an expensive proposition but if done correctly, will be justifiable both esthetically and financially. I am not talking about some of the true theatre replicas that some folks create and I have nothing against those per say but my ideal would be a large, comfortable, acoustically treated, light controllable space setup for all of my uses (HT and music being primary). In the meantime, my learning process continues.

Some pictures:

The current equipment list is:

LG 44" DLP (largest display that would fit in the cabinet)
Panasonic PT-AE 900U
Grey Wolf 106" PJ Screen
Parasound C2 (Surround Sound Processor)
Sunfire 400 Watt, 5 channel power amp (inside the cabinet)
Denon DVD 3910
Comcast HD-DVR
Monitor Audio GR60 (Mains)
Monitor Audio GR 20 (Rear)
Monitor Audio SLCR (Center for RP-DLP, SB for PJ)
Monitor Audio CP Gold In-wall (Center for PJ, SB for RP-DLP)
Velodyne DD-18 (Subwoofer)
Grado SR325I (Headphones)

and the all important Harmony Remote to keep everything working correctly during assaults on the equipment by the family ;^)

Nice! Speakers wires all look to be hidden, love the layout and the furniture.

OOPS my bad, I was thinking of the EP500, dumb me:confused:
Yeah when I (quickly) looked at that pic, I thought it was a thin main speaker (was looking for a short box).
The palm tree kinda hides it well.

Anyhow, great setup......

Very very nice.

The cabinet is great! Is it Cherry?
Thanks for the nice comments guys. The cabinet is maple stained dark cherry to match the kitchen cabinets. You can see from the photos how leaky this room is. Not ideal, but it still sounds pretty good. Many of us have to adapt our HT's to available space and that leaves us wondering just how much better it can sound. You can only do so much with EQ and room treatments.:)

Looks great!!!!!

Your room layout is very similar to mine.

I would not fret too much about the open architecture.

I think you will find that open designs actually help elliminate room loading problems that are the primary bain of those with smaller, closed in rooms.
I know I will get some flack for this opinion but I have heard many systems over the years and I have come to prefer the deficiencies of an open HT over a poorly executed closed system that was too small.

If you have the power and the speakers, as you do, you are probably ahead of the game.

It looks like everybody in the family won this one!!!!

Happy Holidays!

Happy Holidays to you too Westcott. Yes, everyone is happy with the sound and the compromises were reasonable. Interesting theory on the open room HT. Maybe I should change the name of this thread to My quasi-anechoic HT setup:D

Thanks Mike, since I have two centers (depending on the display I'm using) which center channel placement gives you the "eak feeling", in the Entertainment Center (I'm guessing this one due to the offset) or the in-wall?

The one in the entertainment center... its not a great location for sound... but it is the best location for your setup. Its enclosed in an external case.

Other then that, its wonderful, and you got to give up somethings for the creature conforts we all enjoy... So I am just a nutty sound guy.

This said, I would be very happy with that setup. Very nice.

That describes most here. I seriously considered hacking the entertainment center cabinet to allow for a screen centered placement of the CC speaker but the way the cabinet was built it would never look right so offset it is. AT this point I really don't notice it so no harm no foul. The in-wall is the primary movie watching CC and is centered just under the screen and has worked out fine. I am really impressed with the MA in-wall, it is essentially a sealed GR10.
