By my informal survey (read the signs as I drive by), the stations around me don't know what to do. Keep in mind I only pay attention to premium prices since that's what the car requires. One station is $3.09 (hitting THAT one tonight--only about 0.10 more than I've been paying), a block away a no-name brand is $3.47, a couple blocks up & they're at $3.18.

In Canada we've had our gas prices go up more than 40% in less than a week. Pretty scary. I had to pay a $1.14 a litre yesterday, today it's averaged at $1.34, that's $5.70 a gallon!. Keep in mind I live in the second or third cheapest province for gas. It goes as low as $.94 a litre in AB, but in NF, whoa momma.

I truly feel sorry for you guys when winter hits. Heating oil and natural gas prices will be ridiculous! Florida is seeing the pinch now since natural gas transmission lines were damaged. The electric companies are already calling for conservation since plants run on gas.

Wow, that was encouraging Majorloser, kick a guy when he's down :p . LOL, I hadn't even thought about that yet. Where I'm moving it's baseboard heating anyway.

Damn... $2.62 (or $3.29) a gallon. I really feel sorry for you guys.

Here in the UK (by my dodgy math) a gallon will set you back over $6.30!

:D
Hey sploo,

I feel sorry for you, too. And I think we over on this side of the pond have it durn good at 3 bucks per.

Funny, but you know, 'oil' prices are the same all over the world. But here's a little suggestion for you. Do you remember a couple hundred years ago...King George was the boss, I think. We over here had a little tea party...got tired of tithing to the monarchy. Now, if you could figure out some way to reduce that Brit 2 pound tax on gas you pay with a similar vote of disapproval........ ;)

That's kinda funny, 'cause most of our royal family are big eared idiots. At least by getting rid of them you avoided being ruled by a big eared, dumb SOB. *ahem* :p

Actually, I'd be far more inclined to have the lying scumbag politicians thrown into the sea than the monachy. Besides, the British royal family are a bunch of inbred Greeks and Germans anyway*.

The problem with fuel prices is that us Brits are far too polite. Even when we protest it kinda peters out because we can't be bothered with the fuss. That's the only thing I admire about the French; bringing the entire country to a halt because the government has added half a Euro to your tax bill is nothing...

Of course, you could do what some people here are now doing - get a diesel car, and run it on vegetable oil. Got a mate selling conversion kits, and he's doing a good trade - not only cheaper but less environmentally damaging too.

*Before someone decides to flame me, I'm not having a go at Greeks or Germans, I'm simply pointing out reality.

News Flash

They shut down most of the local Gas pumps on the west coast of florida and are only pumping regular gas at the larger stations. Looks like my new TL will have to stay garaged for awhile

What was I thinking buying a car that required premium gas

My friend that does the veg oil systems uses a Cetane Enhancer to raise the power produced by the oil to that of diesel (the difference isn't actually much).

He claims (and I don't have data to back this up) that most premium petrol (gasoline) products are the normal fuel with plus enhancer (which would be much cheaper to add to regular fuel yourself).

I'd check this before trying it, but it might be a solution to not being able to buy premium.

Besides, I'd expect the only side effect from using regular would be pinking, and you'd be able to hear that (and stop using the car).

yea let me know about that. In addition to pinging, I will likely experience:
higher emissions
lower fuel economy
decreased engine performance

I don't mind adding an octaine adder if I have to so I can driver again if that in fact is a good solution for this hopefully temporary crisis.

In any event, it could be a lot worse! Thankfully I have a roof over my head and a fridge filled with food for the family. Thats more than most people can say that were affected by Katrina :(

Amen to that.

One thing I remember my Dad telling me when I was growing up - if you think you have problems, look around. Somebody always has it worse.

I can't believe this forum went this long without a thread about the price of gasoline. So I guess I'll start one.

Yesterday the price of 87 octane "regular" was $2.62 a gallon (+9/10ths of a penny), Today the same stuff is $3.29! Thats a jump of $.67/gallon in one day! I filled my work van yesterday for $71.75, if I use the same amount of gas today it will cost over $90! And my company has 5 of them! Thats almost $500/day just in fuel expenses!

* Its gotten to the point where my Mitsubishi Mirage is a "Gas Hog". If I had $20,000 to replace it with a hybrid I would. At least my bike is getting close to 50mpg.

* Home Theater & Stereo suddenly became alot more popular now that snowmobiles and jetski's have become hobbies for rich folks.

* Despite my warning him several times of rising gas prices (he seemed to believe one of the governments jobs was to keep gas below $2/gallon) my brother bought not one, but two Cadillac Escalades and a Mustang GT this year. So I can give a hearty laugh at his expense, because I told him so.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Ok, I feel better now. Anybody else care to vent about gasoline?
Hey, it's just free market capitalism!

(Actually, there are price controls that the government has, or it would be much more that you would be paying.)

The Costco around where I live has run OUT OF GAS!

Can you believe this? Costco gas station has no gas?!

Man, I wish I had brought some buckets with me the last time I filled up at Costco (2 days ago).

One thing bothers me about hybrid vehicles

Hybrids have this huge battery pack, that some have noted only lasts about 5-8 years. Where does it go when it's replaced? I hope for the sake of the environment that they are recyclable as easily as lead-acid batteries otherwise, what's the point? You may be saving some fossil fuel, but you may be resigning huge poisonous battery packs to a landfill.

There is a simple solution here, start selling it by the liter instead of the gallon.

I remember how much cheaper carpet got when they stopped selling it by the sq.yd. and started selling it by the sq.ft., so I know it works. ;)

no it doesn't

Canada sells gas by the liter. It's not cheaper up here thats for sure. Its more expensive. Think about costco. Piano's are cheaper in a 4 pack, then in single servings (haha, family guy).

As far as hibrids go, They don't have to be a Battery kind, thats the old school hibrid. Hydrogen man, simplify! BMW made a hydrogen/gas hibrid that burns hydrogen in a combustion camber just like gas, and you can flip back and forth between the two, depending on the availibility on hydrogen or gas. Lets not forget the universe is 99% hydrogen.

Yep. You will get pinging, which sensors will detect & retard the ignition. Basically the car will lose power & performance until you start feeding it the higher octane gas again. Yes, I tried cheaping out years ago on my high-compression engine. It'll run, but like poo. :(

Those of us whose worst worry is getting premium fuel for our new (or old) toys are indeed fortunate.

Burning hydrogen is by no means economical. You have to spend more energy extracting the hydrogen from water or petroleum than what you can get back from burning the extracted hydrogen.

Don't let all the hype surrounding hydrogen fuels fool you.

Yes, the universe is full of hydrogen. But the problem is that it is rare to find hydrogen in its elemental state (H2). Most of the time it is bound to something else, H2O, CHn, etc. You need to spend energy to extract the hydrogen from those compounds.

Unless of course you can extract hydrogen directly from the sun, or interstellar gas clouds (but that wont happen for quite sometime ;) )

Ah, another enlightened soul. :) Well, said furrycute. Unfortunately for those pushing all the alternative fuels & hybrids, so far humans have not found an energy source nearly as efficient as dead dinosaurs. We will have to come up with something eventually, but right now it make more economic sense for the short-term to optimize the current internal combustion engines; for example, Audi/VW's direct injection technology and diesels.
