Couple of questions regarding set up BenQ2050A

I don't have a screen yet but I am just playing around with it and noticed 2 things:

1 - Is there a way that I can get the picture from reflecting off of the ceiling? Currently, there is a t.v. on the wall so maybe it's the glass on the plasma that is interfering? (Will the screen prevent this from happening?)

2 - Why do I have to tilt the projector down to get the correct angle on the wall? The projector is angled a lot with CDs...

See pics attached to what I am talking about.

Well cover that tv lol...then we can help
So it was the reflection of the glass. Now just wondering about the tilt? I can't vertical shirt it down because it is at its max... something doesn't seem right.

I agree, just not sure based on the info. Maybe @BMXTRIX sees something glaring

You have the projector sitting to high. The center of the lens needs to be about 3" below the bottom edge of the image. It has MINIMUM lens shift, so you can't move the image anywhere you want to on your wall, just a couple of inches up or down to correct a tiny bit for mount length. But, in general, you must mount it, right side up, below the bottom edge of the image by about 3 inches.

If ceiling mounted, the center of the lens must be about 3" above the top edge of the projected image.

Just lower the projector, don't tilt it downwards. This photo explains things VERY well. It shows the image in relation to the lens...

excellent thank you.... so if I was to mount it to the ceiling (which I want to do) I have to mount it upside down correct?

Also, I have a UPS that is nearly 20 feet away from the projector. The manual says not to use any other power cord other than the one that comes with it. Is there a way around this? Just wondering why I can't use a longer power cord as long as the power cord voltage specs are the same.

Yes, when ceiling mounting the HT2050A, it MUST be upside down. This way it is projecting 'downwards' instead of 'upwards' like it is now sitting on your table. You can just pick it up, flip it over, and HOLD IT on top of a ladder upside down to see what it will look like. I always do this to test fit the location. Get a 6' ladder (or so) and some books. I clear the area, and always keep my hands on the projector, but I flip the projector over and set it on top of books until the screen position looks about perfect, then measure. Yes, I have someone help me do this to ensure I never drop the projector.

For power, you can do whatever you want. I'm not sure if the HT2050A uses a IEC power cord or a mickey mouse style cord, at the projector, but the other end is still a standard Edison plug. So, just use an extension cord.

If running any power through your ceiling, use proper Romex 14 or 12 gauge wire as required by law. I extended the power for my projector and my TV to a surge suppressor this way. You can use an inlet/outlet power extender if you want. Not sure what your plan is there.

Great never thought of the extension cord.... Is it ok just to run an extension cord through the drop ceiling and then connecting that to the UPS?

Also, I am having difficulty finding a mount that will fit the HT2050A with about a 6 inch clearance from the drop ceiling. Any recs on mounts?

I'm not sure what the law is about drop ceilings, but I think you must use Romex. I would use an inlet/outlet setup to follow code. A standard power outlet for about $1.00. Then the inlet like I linked to. This should meet National Electric Code and be fine for a permanent in-ceiling installation.

Well, I have long diatribes on ceiling mounts. I swear, swear, swear by the Chief RPMAU mount, or one of it's similar Elite mounts. The Elite mount allows for micro-fine tuned adjustments after it is fully installed. It does not come with a projector mounting plate or the ceiling connection. The projector mounting plate is purchased separately, or comes in as part of the kit. So, the RPM is a 'Elite' mount. The RPMAU is the Elite mount that comes with a locking mechanism (type-A) and a universal mounting plate (type-U). So, RPM A U or RPMAU.

You still then get a standard 1.5" flange for the ceiling, and a 1.5" steel pipe of whatever length you want. You can get 1.5" steel pipe from Home Depot as well as a 1.5" steel flange. Both are in the plumbing section.

The mount itself, I get on eBay. I search high and low for a good deal, and it can be had for under $100. The reason to get the universal plate with it is that it will work with any projector you may get in the future.

So, while something like this is ideal, and a fair price...

It's still pricey and there are better deals out there. If you can accept a color other than black, you can also get even better deals. Just a bit of looking. The RPM mount itself works with a ton of different plates, so sometimes it makes sense to buy the mount and the plate separate from each other, sometimes as part of completely different purchases/products. It can be weird.

ie: For $28 you can get the RPM Elite mount with a pole (too long) and a ceiling plate shipped to your door.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Chief-RPM-Series-Projector-Ceiling-Mount/123485713744?epid=19015178216&hash=item1cc0527550:g:2jUAAOSwEKpb5dIr

You will still need the plate that attaches to your projector. That can be a problem if you want the really good SLMU universal bracket...

So, not really cheap, but about $120 or so for everything but the pole you need.

But, you can find packages with the plate for a good price...

Of all of these, if you need/want black, then the first link I gave for the $30 mount and then two links later for the $30 plate are the best deal I've seen on eBay right now. I have found other good deals in the past, and they come up from time to time, but they often go quick and when others ask and I see a good deal, I recommend it. So, that's what we have on eBay right now that I can find.

If you are handy, you can modify a 'custom' mount to fit your projector. Just a few bolts and a drill and perhaps a hacksaw. No modifications to your projector. Not sure how handy you are.

I am interested in getting something all at once to avoid the confusion. I am a little confused about your recs. When you say the first link you gave for the $30 dollar mount (the first link is priced at $100? I am missing something here.

From your recs.. I am thinking this: (Does this have everything I need except the pole?)

OR this.. I don't care about the white (Does this have everything I need or do I need a plate or whatever its called? To clarify... the plate is for the projector to attach and the bracket is for the ceiling?

Would something like this pipe work? https://www.amazon.ca/Anvil-8700143608-Fitting-Nipple-Length/dp/B0058PRD52/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1547124660&sr=8-3&keywords=npt+pipe+1.5"+X+5"

Any thoughts on this:

My bad, I mean this piece:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Chief-RPM-Series-Projector-Ceiling-Mount/123485713744?epid=19015178216&hash=item1cc0527550:g:2jUAAOSwEKpb5dIr

and this one...
https://www.ebay.com/itm/CHIEF-RPA000-4GH8-A-V-Ceiling-Universal-Projector-Mount-Assembly/143079856849?hash=item2150395ad1:g:~T8AAOSwjMtb8GN-

So, that's my second and 4th links. Yes, that 4th link includes a mount, but it's a pretty bad one.
So, about $60 total and you get pretty much everything you need and you get the value of a $150 mount for about half the price.

Yes, that type of pipe is just fine. It should be available from the plumbing section of your local hardware store.

Yes, that's junk.
Reviews on mounts like that are often strong, but in reality that's a 3.0 star mount, at best. It doesn't have a solid swivel point for side to side or forward backward adjustment that's separate from the locking mechanism. So, as soon as you loosen it, it flops around. It doesn't have any turning mechanism at all, or if it does, it doesn't appear to lock down at all, which means it will never be straight. Remember, a half a degree of difference at the mount can equate to several inches of difference on the wall. So, you want a mount that has very good adjustments that lock in tight and stay in place.
The mount also doesn't offer a quick release mechanism in case you do want, or need, to pull the projector down for service or cleaning, or just plain safety. The mounting plate is also 'custom' built for the BenQ, which sounds good, but requires you to buy a whole new mount should you buy a new projector. It's also not exactly 'cheap'.

If you were to look on Amazon, at what I would consider a price reasonable decent quality projector mount, then this would be it:
https://www.ebay.ca/itm/QualGear-Pro-AV-QG-KIT-CA-3IN-W-Projector-Mount-Kit-Accessory-Single-Joist-Ce/223228422823?hash=item33f9736aa7:g:OqwAAOSw18Jb6hqq:rk:3:pf:0

You can see, immediately, how much better the build quality is to that of the cheap mount you linked to, and for not a lot more!

But, I would say that Chief is at least twice as good as the QualGear model. The micro adjustment is far superior, and the overall tightness of Chief mounts is excellent. Then the universal mounting bracket is far more rigid, holding the projector in place much better. Both use 1.5" NPT pipe, so both can use any length of pipe desired. They both also can use any type of ceiling flange as desired.

So I bought the one in the 2nd link (CHIEF RPA000 4GH8 Ceiling Universal Projector Mount Assembly).... I didn't get the this:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Chief-RPM-Series-Projector-Ceiling-Mount/123485713744?epid=19015178216&hash=item1cc0527550:g:2jUAAOSwEKpb5dIrhttps://www.ebay.com/itm/Chief-RPM-Series-Projector-Ceiling-Mount/123485713744?epid=19015178216&hash=item1cc0527550:g:2jUAAOSwEKpb5dIr

I figured the one I ordered comes with everything so I might as well give it a try before I order the replacement mount like you suggested.

What is exactly isn't so great about the mount that I will be getting with the one I ordered?

You bought this?
https://www.ebay.com/itm/CHIEF-RPA000-4GH8-A-V-Ceiling-Projector-Mount-Assembly-/132853981421?oid=143079856849

It isn't an Elite mount, it comes with a 'custom' bracket the is not the proper one for your projector, so it will need some parts and pieces to modify it, or you would still need a universal plate to attach it to your projector. It will need the extension column and it will need a ceiling flange.

A projector mount basically has four parts to it.
Starting at the projector:
Projector bracket - This is the piece that screws onto the projector.
Mount - This is the piece that has all the adjustments on it to align the projector and hold it in place.
Column - This is the bar that extends the projector down from the ceiling.
Ceiling bracket (or flange) - This is what connects to the physical ceiling.

Most Amazon style mounts come with 'everything' and they do little to none of it very well under $100. Under $50 on Amazon and I've yet to see anything I would recommend. This is because the mount uses weak bolts that are hard to adjust and often don't hold a projector very well. They are 'floppy' mounts. Just letting the projector flop around and aren't stable at all. They have limited (or no) adjustments in proper directions, and they most often have no height adjustment which means you are outta luck if the height isn't right for the projector you own. They may not have a quick release, which means taking it down for service can be nearly impossible without going through the entire setup process again, which is made very difficult because the mount is (once again) floppy.
This is why professional mounts are sold as separate parts and pieces. You get each piece for exactly the purpose it was designed for. Most do have a package which includes a universal mounting plate along with the mount. But, rarely to never a column or ceiling bracket.

? this was one of the options in your links that you recommended???... I thought it would fit. Not good news. I wish I knew this before.

You suggested the one I bought so what about it can I use?

Wait! What the heck am I looking at?
When I click on this link...

It shows me what I was talking to you about, and I was befuddled as to why I would have recommend it! I had to click through to get to the item that I believe you actually bought which is a RPA mount with the newer universal mounting plate.

Cripes, I was thinking I was a real a-hole for recommending the wrong thing.

So, what that has is the RPA mount, which is the older model which is tougher to adjust as precisely as you may want. As well, it has the extremely awesome SLBU universal mounting plate which is awesome. It only has three mounting legs on it, so when you get it and fit the legs to the projector, you may find you need a fourth leg.

If you do, they are out there...

Then you will need a ceiling flange plate. They sell this as a separate item because every ceiling is different and the mount itself could be attached directly to the ceiling if no extension was needed. They make ceiling plates for vaulted ceilings, drop ceilings, structural ceilings, etc. They make plates that span between joists and more. A typical home setup will have a joist you can attach a ceiling plate to directly with at least two good bolts. This is typical for my installations and I get a standard 1.5" plumbing flange from Home Depot and paint it flat black with spray paint.

I think I actually got these off of Amazon because I wanted several and didn't want to pay ten bucks a pop from Home Depot...

Still, it's better to only buy one if that's all you need, or check eBay for similar items at a better price if you can find it.

The pipe is standard 1.5" NPT pipe (black iron) from Home Depot as well at whatever length you need.

The rub - You have the universal plate (SLBU) and an okay mount (RPA), but you still need the pipe and a ceiling flange. If you can handle the pipe, this gives you a top quality ceiling flange and throws in the elite mount, which is why I recommended it to begin with...

The price ends up being really good on all of it.

Painting can sound painful, and is a bit in the Winter, but I grab a can of flat black spray paint and a deep box. Throw my parts to paint in it and take it outside. Do a quick coat of paint and run it back inside to dry. Do that a few times and I have a good coat of paint on all my parts. No issues with threading in my experience, just paint them. I also paint the bolts I am going to use to attach it to the ceiling so everything matches.

Yeah, you should be good. I just am not a fan of the RPA mount. I like the SLBU bracket and the RPM mount. The RPA mount works, but I would keep an eye out there for a good deal on a elite mount (RPM) and swap out the RPA for the RPM at some point. They are interchangeable with the pole and the projector bracket. The RPM is a little taller, but you can get around that with lens shift on the 2050A.

This is what I keep seeing when I click on the link for the mount that you bought...

Yes, because you bought the one I originally linked, that's what I see, and why I was so confused!

phewf I thought I was effed for a sec.

Honestly, living in Canada, there were not many options. Even the one I bought was originally $100 CAD for shipping. I mentioned it to the seller and he managed to lower the box size and I paid $80 shipping. Not cheap but still not too bad..... about $130 CAD.
