Connect a Curtis 2100dvd recorder to tv/Satellite to record

Hi,
I am very inept when it comes to cabling connections outside of PC's. I want to connect a Curtis 2100 dvd recorder to a satellite reciver (viewsat) so I can record movies . There is a Samsung 37" lcd flat screen, a viewsat and a Curtis dvd. I want to record from the satellite. I don't care if I have to watch while recording, but I don't want to control the satellite through the dvd. When there is no dvd I want to have it powered off. Please help me in the calbing setup in very laymans terms.

Welcome to the forum!

What I envision is that you would:

1. Connect one set of outputs from the Viewsat to the DVD recorder
2. Connect another set of outputs from the Viewsat to the TV
3. Connect the outputs from the DVD recorder to the TV
4. Switch between watching the Viewsat and the DVD recorder by switching inputs on the TV

However, different Viewsat models have different outputs, so I don't know the exact way to do all of that with your gear. Which model Viewsat do you have?

Hi Adam,
I replied earlier in the day (I quess I made an error). The satellite is a viewsat Ultra. I don't think I have enough outputs/inputs on the back of the viewsat and the curtis. Are you saying to connect the rca cables. Please let me know in the easiest of layman's terms as possible.

What is the model number of your Samsung TV?

EDIT: You definitely have options. Let me think about this over dinner (it's just about out of the oven).

The TV is a Samsung 37" HDTV LCD Flat screen LN37A530P1F. Hope this helps.

The input and output options on the backs of the DVD and satellite tuner are the most important things here. You might get more useful information from us if you took a look back there and reported on them. Most laymen can read and report these things.

BTW, what outputs does your TV offer.

P.S. Manuals can be very helpful.

You have multiple options. The easiest option is this:

• Connect the RF cable output (it's the one with the threaded connector) from the Viewsat to the RF cable input on the DVD recorder.
• Connect the RF cable output on the DVD recorder to the RF cable input on the TV ("ANT IN").

If that provides unsatisfactory results, let us know. There are other ways to connect your equipment that may provide better audio and video.

Well I tried your RF option and I now have really messed things. I mistakenly changed the settings from NtSC to PAL and the message on the tv screen is "mode not supported". I have read the Curtis manual and I can't enter any options from the remote of the curtis. It says to reset to factory but I can't. I have also read many sites and others have the same problem. I am now at another standstill.

Alrighty. Let me see if I understand. The RF connection worked, but then you switched it to PAL and it got messed up?

Was the PAL set on your Viewsat or on your DVD recorder? I can help you more when I get home from work, but I don't have much time right now (on my lunch break).

Ok, I am back to NTSC. I took the dvd recorder to another tv and got is reset. Now for the RF connections. No they haven't worked. I can play dvd's but when I go to record it says Paused check for video connections. I press source on the dvd remote and I get monitor tuner (no signal), Monitor dv (no dv), rear CVBS (no signal). If I set the source on the recorder options to s-video, cvbs, or dv I get the message paused for no stable video So in other words the rf solution hasn't helped.

Another question
So I don't know if this matters, BUT my last setup on the older TV had 3 options for red,white,yellow cables... My new TV only has the 1, and other random RCA and USB slots. Would this be my problem, or am I not setting it up right at all anymore?!?!

I had a little success with recording, but I did not get and audio with the exception of music. Talking was extremely low, to the point you could not really hear it. Anyway, I thought the schematics of the devices may help, I have attached as a word file I hope this gets loaded correctly.

I saw this HDTV 4 way switch from Philips at wally-world and thought it may help me out. Before I buy this unit do you think I will be able to have the dvd, satellite and tv running properly and be able to record.

It's great as a switch to select any one of four sources into one input but unless you figure out how to record on your DVD recorder it won't do you a lick of good.
