Backstory:
I recently moved, and through no fault of my own, I am no longer the owner of a large, manly, banker's desk. Instead, I have had the pleasure

rolleyes

to receive a large French writing table (63" x 30"). I have been told to "keep it nice, and no more big boxes anywhere".
Searching for:
A set of computer speakers that have a very high WAF but still sound good (i recognize trade off's will have to be made here).
2 channels are preferred, but if I have to I can put a small subwoofer behind a chair in the corner (about 10 feet in front of the desk). Ideally the speakers are something I could set on my desk without the use of stands, wall mounts etc.
Budget:
I'd love to keep this well south of $300, but if you show me the promised land (within reason, I did just buy, er, was given, a French writing table after all!), I can postpone the purchase until I can stretch my budget a bit.
Primary Use:
I still have my main HT system, so I have to pick my battles, but I'll mostly use these for music. Both listening, and some very basic recording to lay down guitar tracks (mind you nothing that needs dedicated monitors).
Conclusion/The Plea:
Have I been banished to the world of headphones only, or is there still hope that will let my ears breathe? Don't get me wrong, I love my AT M50s and Shure IEMs, but I greatly prefer the relaxed nature of speakers. Please gentlemen, help bring some happiness back to my office.
In remembrance of a fine desk,
Andrew
