Computer Speakers that look and sound good?

Backstory:
I recently moved, and through no fault of my own, I am no longer the owner of a large, manly, banker's desk. Instead, I have had the pleasure :)rolleyes:) to receive a large French writing table (63" x 30"). I have been told to "keep it nice, and no more big boxes anywhere".

Searching for:
A set of computer speakers that have a very high WAF but still sound good (i recognize trade off's will have to be made here).

2 channels are preferred, but if I have to I can put a small subwoofer behind a chair in the corner (about 10 feet in front of the desk). Ideally the speakers are something I could set on my desk without the use of stands, wall mounts etc.

Budget:
I'd love to keep this well south of $300, but if you show me the promised land (within reason, I did just buy, er, was given, a French writing table after all!), I can postpone the purchase until I can stretch my budget a bit.

Primary Use:
I still have my main HT system, so I have to pick my battles, but I'll mostly use these for music. Both listening, and some very basic recording to lay down guitar tracks (mind you nothing that needs dedicated monitors).

Conclusion/The Plea:
Have I been banished to the world of headphones only, or is there still hope that will let my ears breathe? Don't get me wrong, I love my AT M50s and Shure IEMs, but I greatly prefer the relaxed nature of speakers. Please gentlemen, help bring some happiness back to my office.

In remembrance of a fine desk,
Andrew

Wait til you can stretch the budget... maybe something like this:

The WAF would be great if you save a bit more for something like the custom walnut burl or rosewood finishes... very classy although it starts to get expensive really quick if you play around with the custom finishes on their site...

Thanks Matt, I've actually heard those KRK's before when I was thinking about turning my old office into a studio. Good sound, but I think I'd get beaten if I tried to bring those in the house. You should have seen the face made when I tried 'em out at the store :D.

I think these are great looking:

There is also a Mk3 version of the speakers but they are $399.
I agree Phillip, those are pretty good looking and think they may be a contender. Any idea what the difference between the Mk2 and Mk3 is? I also found an older review of the S200A on Audioholics and they looked pretty nice as well. They seemed like a good step up in cost though.

KRK and Mackie are very good pro-monitors.
AudioEngine are also very highly regarded - A2 is in your budget and it's pretty small : 6”(H) x 4”(W) x 5.25”(D)

A5 would a better option, however it's bigger in both size and price :D
I think these may be too similiar (though at least smaller) to what I'm having to replace. I've been using an old set of JBL monitors with a small KLH sub for years, but The A2s in white are pretty striking!

It's also worth mentioning that the equipment closet that powers the rest of my home is actually in the office. If needed, I could always run a line from the computer and use the second zone on my Onkyo 906 to power something. Along those lines, what do y'all think about something like this in white?

I know I originally stated I would most likely put these on the desk, but since the MMGWs are flat I could mount them to the walls and they would blend in. I'm not sure about the SQ though. I'm going to assume that the MMGWs aren't going sound nearly as nice as the 3.6s and 1.6s that I've auditioned in the past, especially since they'd be mounted next to a window in the corners.

I had thought about trying to pick up another pair of AGA A'Diva's to use, but I think I want something with a slightly bigger sound than they produce, and I would only be able to afford one speaker at the moment, lol.

100 Hz-16 kHz + - 3 db
- You'll need a sub for these.
At price point of $325 plus sub - you blown your budget outta window.

Speaking of passive speakers - why not go Orbs or KEFs:

Both are designed to be wall mounted

I had forgotten all about KEF. It looks like both of those have a fq range similiar to the the Maggies though so would need a sub as well. Have you heard either by chance?
Hts1001.2: 120Hz - 22kHz
Ci400: 80Hz - 27kHz

I had the chance to audition these KEFs a while back, but they're way outside my price range IIRC.

Yea, they both would sub as any other small speaker.
I haven't heard KEFs, but heard nothing but good about them.
Imo you should pick ones depends on the budget and subfoower placement and WAF too :D

Well, going by the specs on the pages, the M200MkII have 35/w channel, 55hz-20khz frequency response, and simulated walnut side panels. The MkIII have 60/w channel, 53hz-20khz response, revised, upgraded bass tuning (whatever that means), and solid hardwood side panels. I don't know if those differences are worth an extra $120.

They also look a bit different:
