Composite vs S-video

Are the formats compatible at all? I tried connecting my components using composite in to the reciever, then s-video out to my TV, but I got no picture. I switched the cable to composite to the TV, and I got a picture. Does all the inputs need to be s-video in order to output s-video to the TV? It would seem to be, or am I wrong? If that's the case, I'd have to go all composite since my VCR doesn't have an s-video out.

You may be able to send all your info via COMPONENT cable out, but your TV may not support component inputs. As for mixing composite and s-video, I think that you'll need to stick with a single type or else it won't work.

What brand is your receiver?

It sounds like your receiver does not transpose the coposite signal to S-Video. Some receivers will do this, some won't.

You are correct with your assumption. Some receiver do offer some form of upconversion through the HDMI output, though.

I just got smart and read the manual. Apparently I'll have to send a monitor out with both (composite and s-video) because they run on different buses. So the VCR, PS2, and Gamecube will send composite, and the CATV & DVD will be on s-video.
