I'm thinking about getting a complete home theater setup for $2000. I do not know much about what types of brands are good and bad for the price so I'm going to need all your help since you all have a lot more experience than I do. Can you guys suggest to me some possible setups I can get started with and research to get the ball rolling?

I'm really tired of listening to music or watching a DVD when the bass is not tight enough or is just boomy and ugly sounding, or when some frequencies are higher than others. So I'm pretty much looking for cinema quality stuff.

I'm looking for a 5.1 system (possibly upgrading to 7.1 in the future) with receiver.

What do you need to get, what do you already have?
I assume you already have a DVD player and a TV, are you planning on replacing them with the included cost of $2000, or is the $2000 for audio only?

What do you do mostly, listen to music, play games, watch movies, watch broadcast? Do you have some type of HD service or do you plan to get it? Do you want to get an HD movie format player?

The $2000 is for audio only. I mostly listen to music and watch movies.

If you were going to be spending 2k on audio only I am assuming that means speakers, receiver and cables. If that were the case I would probably look at spending about 1300 on speakers 600 on a receiver and a max of 100 on cables.

With something like that I would check out the what to buy 3500 dollar system because if you take out the tv, dvd player etc...youll be hitting right around there. Another speaker alternative would be av123.com x-series speakers as well.

I guess I shouldn't have put "complete" because I'm looking for audio only.

Put $600 aside for a sub from SVS or Hsu and then get in your car with your favorite CD/DVD and audition every $1400 speaker system you can. Get back to us after that.

Please just clarify one question. You say audio only. Do you need a receiver too? Or just speakers for $2000? You know the big question really is if you need an HDMI receiver?

I will give you a couple of suggestions. Don't know what size room you have. Sub might have to be upgraded because of room size.
Depending on your answer on the receiver suggestions to follow.

2-X-series MTM's mains $449
1-X-series X-cs center $139
2-X-series X-cs surrounds $278
1-Rocket UFW-10 Subwoofer $599

$1465 plus shipping.

I know you were looking at audio only. I sent you that link because the receiver, speakers and subwoofer hit about 2k total. As I said without the other stuff it fits your pricerang. Check out the link I posted above.

How big is your room? Do you prefer satellite speakers, all bookshelf, or towers/bookshelf combo? The answer to that will determine what type of budget you can set aside for a surround receiver (less the sub).

More efficient speakers don't need a 40lb top end surround receiver. As mentioned earlier, a great subwoofer will really round out your system. Decide how large you can go, and we'll make some recommendations.

I can recommend a great system for under $2000, but if it's going in a bedroom, it could be all wrong. If you're trying to fill a 5000 cu/ft room, it may be all wrong as well.

I need a receiver too. I should just say I have $2000 for a receiver, 5.1 speakers, and cables.

As for the HDMI question: It would be nice to have HDMI, but I don't think I really need it. I mean that is just for plugging your video game system in there right?

This is going to sound crazy but I would like tower/bookshelf combo and my room is really small. I believe its around 8x8 or 9x9 (I don't remember). I just want bigger speakers because I want to feel the sound and I don't see that happening if I get all bookshelf speakers.

You will feel the sound with bookshelf or floorstanders. Only if you get the right speakers, and subwoofer.
