Rental at best. Best Buy already sent me an email saying this would be coming out, so they are trying to get the numbers up for this one. The 1981 version is on sale right now too at Amazon and BB. I'd probably buy that one before I bought the new one.
The original one - IMO - is far, far better than the remake though.
The only aspect this trashy remakes wins, is on the visual effects and that couldn't be different anyway (comparing 1981 to 2009).
If you saw the trailer and heard the only 3 words of the script that count, "Release the Kraken", you know the whole thing. I admit to having seen it in 3D; my wife and I had seen several talky European movies in a row and wanted to see something that required little thought or attention. COTT certainly satisfied that urge and sent us scurrying back to the arthouse. There was something unbearably odd and laughable about seeing Liam Neeson in shiny armor, trying to be Zeus.
