Car Audio speakers w/ shallow mounting depth

I am in the process of restoring a 65 mustang and could use some car audio speaker advice. They make some molded plastic kick pannels to accomodate speakers. They are sold seperate, or with some cheap pioneer speakers installed that have a 1-5/8 to 1-3/4" mounting depth.

I was planning on some entry level JL audio speakers and an amp, but at 2.5" deep, the JL's wont fit.

Any advice on 6 1/2" or 5 1/4" car speakers with <2" mounting depth? I am trying to stay in the $100/pair price range. There is an infinity reference model that is pretty shallow, are these any good?

Also, is it still worthwhile to get this amp, given the speaker compromise?

Thanks for the lead.
It looks like the Shallow RUA models would work for the front kick pannel speakers.

Would the 3-way 6x9" discus speakers be OK for the back or would I need to stick with the referance line for a good match?

I used to be a car audio junky back in the day. I was on a forums with soime very experienced people and they seem to recommend these brands.

CDT Audio ( have a look at their drivers) very neutral, solid mid range clarity, smooth tweeter are some comments on these. you can find them at www.woofersetc.com.

An external amp would give you much better performance than the internal on the head unit, especially if yo go with components(seperates).

The ideal way to do it i believe is have a nice pair of component sin the front with some deadening(secondkin) in the doors to killl vibration, road noise etc. They say front stage imaging is very important as the components up front are considered the main speakers.
You can get co-axial speakers, mid range clarity might suffer, but they would be better in the bass department.
If only audio is the main goal and no price constraints a affordable set up would be:-
Get a 4 channel amp, use 2 channels for your front components and bridge two for the subwoofer(Ed, Image Dynamcis etc lot of id companies) you can later buy down the line to *** some low hz. You can run coaxials (6 x9) in the rear from the head unit.

And you know the take on JL high quality equipment at high prices. There are many quality ID companies making everything from amps, speakers to woofers in the car audio world also, if you want bang for the buck you can go this route.
Peace

I used the shallow mount 6 1/2" Infinites in a previous car, don't think you can go wrong with them for around $75-$85.

the 3 way would work fine, but with the sub, you might not need them. The speakers are extremley accurate(blistering at certian levels). Had the 5 1/4 refs with a 10w7 in my buddys clk, and it was amazing.

Speaker feedback

Thanks for the feedback.
I found out that you can coaxial mount the tweeters on the 6x9" and 6x8" MB Quart Reference speakers. This will probably work out well with the 5.25 or 6.5" shallow component speakers in the front.

However, a sub is not in the short term plan. There are plenty of other costly parts like the engine, transmission, etc. I wouldn't mind adding a small sealed enclosure with 10" or 12" woofer and amp in the future.

I was able to get 5 gallons of the second skin spectrum and some sheets of the damplifier to treat the entire interior and undercoating of the car. This should tone down the road noise and help the audio on this classic car.

good luck sounds like a plan. Have you considered dynamat in the door panels?

Hifonics Amp

Does any one have experience with the Hifonics car audio amps like the TXI4408 or 6408 model? I can get the model with 85 Watts x 4 channels into 4 ohms for about the same price as the Total Mobile Audio Amp (60 x 4 @ 4 ohms).

Is the quality and performance of Hifonics Comparable to TMA? Better? Worse?

Thanks again,
-JC
