I have finally decided to get a PS3 for gaming and, more importantly, blu ray movies.

Question - What are the advantages to buying the 80GB version vs the 40GB version? Is it worth the extra money?

I think one of the biggest advantages is backwards compatibility with PS2 games, but beyond that I'm not really aware of exactly what you get. I was hard pressed to get the 60GB over the 40GB on release date, but it was 100 bucks, so not to bad.

Doesn't the 80GB model include a game or movie as well now? If you like the game, then the extra space and game may make it worth it to you.

The 80 gig is the only PS3 that is backward compatible for PS2 games. As a DVD player there is no advantage. It also has more USB ports.

Incorrect.

The 40GB PS3 is the only model still in production. The 20GB, 60GB, and 80GB PS3s all play PS2 games. The 80GB doesn't play all PS2 games, the 20GB and 60GB models have hardware for playing the PS2 games, the 80GB uses software emulation to play the games.

You are correct about the DVD playback, so long as the PS3 in question has all the most recent firmware updates they should be in line with one another with DVD upscaling.

The 40GB lacks in USB connections (short 2 from the 4 on the other models), and doesn't feature a multicard reader like the 60GB and 80GB models.

This is Audioholics. I can't believe no one mentioned that the 20, 60 and 80GB version plays SACD's whereas the 40GB does not. I'm not sure about the 120GB version.

As far as extra games, there is a 80GB Motostorm edition version.

Hey, not to make it difficult now that you finally made a decision, but if the looks matter to you, Sony is supposed to release the ceramic white versions in about a month or so along with Metal Gear Solid 4.

I am waiting for that one.

Well considering the near future and the potential that Blu Ray has u should also consider discs become larger and saving those games will take more space so u are safer to go with the 80GB version plus if u wait an extra month in June (next month) there coming out with the 80GB MGS (Metal Gear Solid) version!!!!!!!!! The new Metal Gear Solid!!!! I would wait if I was u!!!

You can easily upgrade the hard drive in any ps3 to any 2.5" SATA drive, I don't beleive there is a limit to HDD size either.

It wasn't mentioned but while the 40g model won't play ps2 games it is backwards compatible with some of the original playstation games.

The 80g is definately nice. The only complaint I have is with the "backwards compatibility." Not all PS2 games play or play correctly. Unfortunately for me, most the PS2 games I like and play are not compatible with the ps3. You can check for ps2 game compatibilty on Sony's site here.
