does the atkins diet say to give up audiohol? :rolleyes:

Rob, my last post was one big joke. The diet works, but it has a very shadey history, plus I love bread. The reason I don't like it, is because carbs are burnt off much easier then calories. So as long as you exersize, which you do, the carbs should be had more then calories, no?

PS, if you want to loose weight, cut off an arm:rolleyes:

The real importance is body fat %
calories are a unit of measure of energy

calories per gram:

"carbs"= 4 calories per gram

protein= 4 calories per gram

fat= 9 calories per gram

Contrary to popular belief you NEED all three in your diet to be happy and healthy and a few micro nutrients (vitamins/minerals/metals). Carbs get a bad rap from their super refined forms (sugar and flour) for their negative effects on health (obeseity, adult onset diabetes).

Figure your maintenance calories you burn through the day, eat more than that and you will gain weight eat less and you will lose weight.

A reasonable "diet" is only 100-250 calories less than maintenance with a weight loss of 1-2 lb weight loss per week for long term success. Maybe a little faster if your very overweight.

Weight training during a weight loss diet helps you maintain muscle mass and lose fat. If you don't work hard, mother nature would rather shed muscle than fat if you are calorie depleted.

After all muscle burns calories fat cells store them. If you don't signal your body to keep the muscle (lift weights) your body will prefer to lose muscle and keep fat cells. That slows your metabolism and reduces maintenance calorie level so when you start to eat "normal" again your primed to store fat.

You might even earn the nickname "skinny fat guy" :)

I agree, and weight lifting is one of the best ways to burn fat. After completing a total body workout, you still burn fat for about 6 hours. As my weighttraining coach said, muscles are the furnace that burns fat.

Unless the science has changed, aerobics are the best way to lose weight. It raises your heartrate for a longer period of time than the short bursts of anarobic activity that weight lifting is. Weight lifting will build muscle but is no guarantee of losing weight because you don't sustain your heartrate.

A combination of both is probably best.

Aerobics burns more fat then lifting, but muscles still burn fat when you are done lifting. Thats why after you work out, they feel hard, and then go all sloppy. Once you stop running, your heart rate drops back down to normal.

Enjoy sipping on an icey cold Coca-Cola Classic on that tread mill. Then what happens?:)

Calorie intake minus calories spent equals weight gain or loss. It is that simple.

Weightlifting puts on weight. Muscle burns fat. More muscle, more burnt fat. Muscle weighs mroe then fat. In the end, you will gain weight, unless you have extreme amounts of fat, then its a balance, or less.

Once you finish the initial phases of Atkins, you will eat carbs. Probably a lot more carbs than you realize. But you won't eat the crappy ones- the ones from white bread, candy, cake, cookies, ice cream, etc etc.

Metabolic advantage is one big plus of Atkins- protein requires more energy to digest than simple carbohydrates. There's a lot of science behind how and why it works, but the bottom line is that it works well. Sure, no "diet" is for everyone, but if you like meat and low-glycemic-index veggies, aren't an alcoholic, and don't have decades of conditioning to eat candy, then Atkins might be for you. Provided you're willing to exercise. That's as crucial to success on Atkins as the food you eat.

Just an FYI- I used to lift weights, but I found that I actually got stronger, faster doing Combat Conditioning than lifting weights. Plus CC gave me more practical strength and improved flexibility. If you love moving plates of iron, knock yourself out, I have no problem. But if you never really cared for lifting, give CC a try. It might just be the program you stick with.:)

Exactly. Less input, more output equals weight loss.

As far as lifting weights helping you lose weight, I know a lot of fat strong guys. Having big muscles doesn't equate to burning of fat. Weight training isn't as efficient a fat burner as aerobic exercise. I've never seen a fat long distance runner. ;)

Rob, is there any info out there on Combat Conditioning that doesn't require me to buy their damned book? Just a free website?

The people you know Probably cheat when they lift, or only do bench (idiots).

I'm assuming by fat, you mean they have a gut. Do they ever do abs? You can get cut abs from doing sit-ups and such. Running will get rid of hte fat faster, but doing muscle exersizes will harden, and enlarge the abs and they will eventually burn alot of fat.

Thats because a lot of powerlifters lift only very heavy, very low repetitions, with alot of rest and also don't watch their diet. One of the most effective ways to fat loss is heigh intensity weight training while keeping in your target heart rate zone for 30min to 1 hr. Both myself and Hugo Rivera (published author and professional bodybuilder) made incredible strides when we developed a program that only takes 30-45 min/day 3-4 days a week. Hugo is obviously much more into it than me and trains a full hour 6 days / week, but the results speak themselves.

Before he looked like this, we was overweight and considered obese:

False. Situps and crunches will make your abs rock hard and larger but will do nothing for the roll of fat that surrounds them. My abs are still rock hard but the six-pack is no longer visible unless I suck in the gut and contract the abs. That's what happens when you slack off and don't get enough aerobic exercise (my excuse is that I hurt my back mountain biking and that's what caused me to sit idle for a long time...)

Look up 'target toning' if you don't believe me.

ugghhhhh, gross....mule, we are trying to be civil here. :rolleyes:

MDS,

Im not going to look that up. Why? Simple. I have a nice tire around my waste, nothing large, but its noticable, and I don't ware tight clothing. From doing sit ups daily in gym class, I have 2 top abs, visible all the time.

Check and mate.:p

I agree. Non-stop circuit training is aerobic. The key, as you said, is keeping your heartrate up. Most people lifting weights or using machines don't keep their heartrate up.

Another thing that makes or breaks a workout is your mind. If your just not in the mood for lifting, your going to get NO results. Yesturday I was at the gym, and I was grunting and making faces and what not, and I had probably the best workout I've had in a long time. It was great, for 15 minutes, by arms were stretching my sleaves, and I looked all buff, but then they went floppy :)
