Both Sirrius and XM receiver options?

I am soon to be in the market for a new receiver for my father, and the one function he wants above all else is to have the option to choose either XM or Sirrius satellite radio, not to be restricted on his choice.

My question is:

For about the $2000 mark what are the options out there OTHER than Pioneer (Pioneer SC-07 has both)? Does anyone else give you the choice of both?

Thanks.

There are a number of receivers that are XM and Sirius ready but that require external tuners. Is that what you're wanting? I just checked Crutchfield's list of satellite radio ready receivers, and there are ones much less than $2000 that can do both. If he just wants a stereo receiver, he can get the Onkyo TX-8555 for about $300.

Hello.

Tuners I am aware you need to buy an antenna for one or the other and they have dedicated inputs for each. But the tuner is built in to most receivers nowadays like the one I have (Is it not?). EDIT: Looks like it is not.

I don't want to sound snobbish here, but he has M&K speakers for the front and subwoofer (few years old I suppose but still sound great). He is looking to replace his current last gen (or more) ELITE 49xxx receiver, I don't know all the call letters on it. It was a flagship at the time, but he doesnt want to spend that type of money for the listening he does. A $300 receiver will probably not do the job to do justice for the rest of his gear. (I could be way out of line here, if so I appologize)

I guess the current thought with anyone reading at this stage would be...Well then why not the SC-07...True it currently is on a short list with the 05 as well. But I was looking to see what options there were for receivers that had both built in rather than being stuck with the very difficult SC lineup...Denon would be on my list but they only have XM built in unfortunately. I like the 3808 for its very VERY good OSD vs the current ELITE OSD.

So that is where I stand. :D

EDIT: I am checking that Crutchifelds list you linked thank you

Let me also ask to better understand...

Do you need to buy "TUNERS" or is it the antenna and subscription only that are needed...Because he is looking to have built in tuners not external. Is that even possible...Sorry for the "dumb" questions. I have never dealt with this aspect before so it is new for me.

Hi pmac,

The receiver that your Dad is after is the Integra DTR-8.9, or the Onkyo TX-NR906.

They retail for $2,000 and $2,299 USA respectively, they had XM radio and Sirius radio, plus a whole lot more top notch features. And the build quality is second to none.

There is no additional tuners to buy.

Here: "If you connect an XM Satellite Radio antenna or SIRIUS Satellite Radio antenna to the Av receiver (both sold separately), you just set the setting in the receiver to XM or SIRIUS respectively, that's all. If you connect both types of antenna, you select XM/SIRIUS, simple as that. Otherwise you select None."

See, how simple it is, just need a couple of antennas and a subscription, that's all.

If I will enumerate all the features of the Integra DTR-8.9 or the Onkyo TX-NR906, it will take almost an entire book, suffice to say that it is one if not the ONE (906) very best receiver in the whole wide world, period!

I personally own the Onkyo TX-SR876, which is almost the same, less few features. And I can tell you with enormous confidence that your Dad will probably fall in love with the Integra DTR-8.9 or the Onkyo TX-NR906.

If he wants to save a good chunk of money, then go with the ONKYO TX-SR876, which is the same receiver basically at 99.5%. And by the way the 876 sell for about $900 USA refurb or brand new right now. If your Dad want the Ultimate, then go with the Onkyo TX-NR906, it has a toroidal transformer, plus Ethernet features, it is the very BEST for the money (about $1,300 USA street or even less). There is no other receiver that can compete with the 906 for that price or even much higher, period! Trust me, it took me years to get to that point. That's not only my firm belief, but it is also the one of several people in the know, including some important reviewers that personally own it themselves. If you or your Dad read German or you can get a translation, check out the review at DVD AREA. The 906 is even much better than the 905.

It is pack, fully loaded; THX Ultra2 Plus, THX Loudness Plus, Audyssey MultEQ XT (Audyssey Pro capability), Audyssey Dynamic EQ, Audyssey Dynamic Volume, HQV Reon-VX50 video processor (excellent all around), TI PCM-1796a Dacs for all channels, 3 TI Aureus DSP chips, VLSC (Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry) for all channels, toroidal transformer, 3 more separate transformers for video, audio and display, top quality parts all around, tremendous power delivery (even into 4-ohm loads), ISF certification, ...

Seriously, I have to stop, it will never end.

Regards to you and your Dad,

Bob
