Boston acoustic repair question

Hello All,

I have a pair of Boston Acoustics VRX surround speakers in my 7.2 system. One of them is now emmiting a scratchy static noise during music and loud action sceens. Is this something I can repair on my own? I am ok with a soldering iron but I dont know much about speaker technology. Any advice would be appreciated on whats broken and if I should fix or just replace. Of course they dont make these anymore so I would have to buy used or replace with another brand.

Have you looked at the speaker? Is the surround foam rotted? If not can you feel the voice coil grating against the magnet pole piece if you gently push the cone in and out? Please answer these questions first.
