This is a great discussion and in the end, it's what's in front of you that matters. I was generic in what I said but it summed up how I feel....to a point.

I wouldn't apply that smaller is better in regards to planars for example. I started in the MMG/SMG category and quickly ascended up the ladder to the 3.5R and that is my current benchmark for all things flat, so to speak.

I believe FMV mentioned cabinet resonance and this is a killer on both sides of the monkey coffin. I've heard small bookshelves that just rapping on the cabinet is like the death knell to unhappiness....and I would venture to say that in some respects, to my own company's low end designs. Hey, you can't build a rock everytime and not everything ends up a winner.

The Spendor S5e, a hobbit sized floorstander, is damn near dead resonant and an absolute pleasure to demo or own. The last thing you would think about is cabinet resonance. Sometimes the smaller speakers just get looked over when you know there is a larger one nearby.

Blah blah...I'm rambling.

Are you sure it was cabinet resonance? Did you have accelerometers attached to the cabinets to verify this? You don't think poor placement or room acoustics had an effect? ;)
Sorry, I forgot my accelerometer in my other jacket pocket that day.:D

I don't think what I was hearing was the room. It was a dedicated, treated demo room set up to display only the S8's and a set of Thiel running through Anthem separates. I have no word other than resonance to describe what I heard. It was as if I were listening to the cabinet instead of the music. That was my impression, at least.
