Bookshelf speakers on a computer desk? Hmm.

These are small speakers that might just fit on the sides.

Keep an eye out for a pair of Radio Shacks' Minimus 7's. they measure about 4x6x4 and have a good, clean sound. They don't have a lot of bass and will require an amp but sound great flanking a monitor.

They stopped making these years ago but they still pop up regularly on epay, garage sales, craigslist and other places for really low prices.

I would basically have to put the speakers behind the monitor... and I'm worried about reflections off the surface of the desk and other things on the desk, like my printer.
Motrek,
Do you see the irony here? If you put the speakers behind your monitor, reflections off your desk and printer will be the least of your worries. I suggest you give some serious thought to alternative locations for your speakers. Maybe wall mounts? Speaker stands on the floor? A higher or wider placement would be MUCH preferable to behind your monitor. If you can't find a location that is unobstructed, you may be less than satisfied with any speaker upgrade.

The obvious question is how much space is on either side of your monitor? If you have 2" on either side, that is info we can get specific with.
Is you desk simply a desk top, or does it have a hutch on the back.
Have you considered wall mounting the speakers and angling them down to align with ears?
